Final update on my father |
He's gaining strength every day and is now able to get around
his hospital room with a walker (he's got a broken foot). They
decided that, considering his recent weakness that a walker was
a safer option than crutches. They asked him this morning when
he wanted to go home and he told them tomorrow. They agreed.
He doesn't think he's going to need help at home, but will call
if he does. I don't know how they'll manage shopping, etc.,
which he usually does since my Mom works 60-70 hrs a week. So I
might still be going, but it's not a given.
Thanks so much for all the support I got while he was so ill. I
really appreciate it.

i hope he improves rapidly, lisa. i know that's going to be quite an
endeavor on his part trying to get his strength back. i can't believe your
mom works that many hours a week! do you think she'll ever slow down?!!!

He's getting much stronger every day. He went from being
unable to sit up to walking several times around his room over
a period of four days. He really turned a corner.
My Mom has always been a workaholic. She's 70 now and just got
a new 5-year research grant. That's on top of all her
administrative work, which is substantial. Whenever she slows
down it catches up with her and she gets really sick. She'll
work like this as long as she's physically able.
Thanks, Cindy.

Hi Lis. Best wishes, youngster.
Oh! I'm dying to tell you my parent story. Do NOT take it as advice,
k?
My old man was so freakin sick, and I was living with him and my
mother, 10 years ago. She kept working, into her late 60s, because
she didn't want to be around the old man, which was my daily duty. I
finally had to leave, and I got my sister with me to ask Mom to
retire. It worked, Bob got me, and within a year, my father got my
sister and her family to live with mom/dad, who died, and mom and them
are still together.
I think back, it all works like it is going to work, I guess.
Really, I be with ya in a sense. Peace
brian

My Mom is only away from my Dad because she's a major
workaholic, even at age 70. I don't know what's going to
happen to her when my father dies. It's going to crash down on
her how little time she's spent with him since he retired 20
years ago (he's 10 years older).
I was supposed to be going to stay with my Dad while he
recouperates from his illness, but he doesn't think he
wants/needs me there. All I can do now is wait and see how he
does on his own.
Thanks, Brian.

Good, hon. You and I are kindred in this, I didn't want to and won't
overstep my bounds... your journey begins.
----------------------
an aside....my old man had all these body fractures, from pushing himself
till he cracked. Strange to watch. And he got Prostate cancer 12 years
before it killed him. Actually, hospice killed him. When they bring out the
morphine, it's all over but the crying. Which is so strange to me now,
because I begged his doctors for years to alleviate his pain. I was the
only one he let hear the absolue wailing when he'd return home from the club
each morning.
Then when he got demented, he'd put on his boat club hat, boat club jacket,
and try to go outside to get in his van and go 'down under' (the club: where
booze flowed until 15 years before his death, and the club which caused
violence in my home as a kid.)
The van was long gone, he wasn't in the same town. He had a '***** eating
grin' as he would say, he kinda knew it....him and his tiny *****, pushing
that walker, which Bob has used since my father's death.
I put a wireless doorbell on it. It works great.
Gotta change his tennisballs again, though.
Good luck, just...talkin'. The subject got me going.
