....in Spain are children of immigrants (from Romania and Uruguay).
We're in absolutely *desperate* need of immigrants in this country, given that the spanish population is aging so quickly (we've been the country with less newborns in the entire world, for much of the past decade, and still have a negative population growth). A few years ago many schools had to close, and you didn't see many children in the parks (esp. compared to how many elderly people you saw). Taking into account that Spain is one of the countries where people live the longest, it was feared that our economy would collapse due to very little people having to pay to mantain a huge population of retired people. Certainly scary.
Things are changing now, but as usual, there's a negative side to it: crime. I hate to admit it, but it's true that the violent crime rates have sky-rocketed, many of them committed by colombians and people from eastern Europe.
I'm not sure whether our police is prepared to face that. As an example, a few weeks ago a colombian teenager was murdered at the gates of his school - by members of a colombian teen gang, 'The Latin Kings'. Apparently, even though most of them are underage, they are into prostitution and drug dealing, and to enter the band the new-to-be member must prove his/herself by *killing* (yes you read correctly) another teenager belonging to the rival band. Absolutely crazy.
We had never heard such things in the past, except on foreign films. Now it's become too real, all of a sudden.
I know that crime and violence are common in Colombia and Russia, but WE DON'T WANT THEIR ***** HERE. We have enough problems already with ETA (a terrorist group), neo-nazis (yes we also have that plague here), the local mob, and unemployment. Now we have to deal with russian, ukranian, moroccian and colombian mafia as well. Just great.
Well, at least we have more young people now.

That's the price for becoming a rich country.

'Rich' is relative... anyway what bothers me is that the increase in the crime rates gives an excuse to those who are against the immigrants.
I'm not against them (it's not too long since people here had to migrate to France or Switzerland, so most people here understand them perfectly), I'm against those who bring their ***** with them (like those boys making up those extremely violent, criminal bands). I'm especially worried about our society becoming used to those violence levels and getting to consider them 'normal'.
