first night on Seroquel |
OK, I took this anti-psychotic pill last night for the first time. I
had slept well. But in the morning, I saw a dream about some of the
things that I always worry about. It just played like a movie.

That happens. Some medications make your dreams more prominent. If its
really an issue then switch to something else.

Seroquel makes my dreams very real and life like. It's very strange
but also pretty pleasant. I dont know maybe this is a common side
effect of this med.

I was on 25 mgs a night, it really put me to sleep, which is why I was
prescribed it years ago. Then i was put on it again,100 mg daily,
when I freaked out this time last year, moving and relatives dying,
nervous breakdown stuff. It really worked, didn't make me tired in
the day. Then it stopped, but not before packing on 15 pounds.
pdoc says 200 to 400 mg a day is acceptable for psychosis treatment.
I just can't stand the weight gain thing. It's not an inconvenience,
it's primary. Who the hell wants to walk around with a gut hanging
out, then say, "I feel great!". That's *****. It also causes
diabetes.

Make sure you let your doctor know if your family has a history of
diabetes. He may suggest something else.

Lamictal. Thats what I am on, about 200mg daily. No weight gain. No
diabetes worries (at this point at least). Lamictal is one of those
drugs whereby you slowly ramp-up on over 2 months, starting with 50mg
for 2 wks, then 100mg for 2 weeks, etc until you reach 200 mg total.
Not sure if this is going to help you, but it could be a thought none
the less.

The next time I see my pdoc I'm asking about that drug.

Id like to get lamictal but i cant afford to pay out of pocket and my
insurance company wont cover it unless ive tried the older and cheaper
mood stabilizers like depakote and lithium. For some reason they cover
seroquel and risperdal though which are both pretty expensive.

I've used seroquel for about 4 years (50mg), and then stopped this
past summer, switched my mood stabilizer from lithium to lamictal (the
generic lamitrogen) and have been so unbelievably up and down in my
moods (far less stable than on lithium, but moreso than without
anything) and my sleeping patterns that I just went back on 50 mg of
seroquel 2 weeks ago.
I can sleep now, but I agree with whoever said that thing about having
a gut hanging out. I lost 35 pounds since last summer and now the
weightloss has stopped and I can't stop focussing on the lovely gunt
on my belly.
I never realized that vivid dreams were a part of meds. I've had them
my whole life. If I were you, I'd give yourself at least 2 weeks, by
which time you should see a lessening of side effects (except the
weight gain).
Also, don't know if you know, but apparently the fatigue and sleep
related side effects become less as your intake increases. I've been
told that 300-1200mg of seroquel is a much different drug than 50mg.
Can anyone back this up?

How many milligrams did you take?
