Object: Flags make me uncomfortable
When I was in New Hampshire on Saturday to campaign, the town we went
to had a lot of flags and dogs.apparently it was a very patriotic
town.I know that not everyone feels the way I do,but I found the sight
of so many flags to be very
bland,monotonous,conformist,provincial,even oppressive...While I know
I'm lucky to live in the U.S. in many ways,I don't like the idea of
countries...The reality is that we are all citizens of Planet
Earth...If there has to be a flag displayed,I wish it would be a
"Planet Earth Flag"....I believe that all
countries,religions,orginazations ect...are abot seperation and
division. But Everyone and everything comes from the same source,In
reality,there is no division...

Your not alone in your feelings. There just isn't an "us" anymore. We
don't even fight wars on our own behalf. Had December 7, 1941 occurred on
September 11, 2001, we'd now be engaged in a war called Operation Japanese
Freedom with the stated goal of liberting the innocent Japanese people from
their evil Emperor and Prime Minister.
These are the same reasons our borders are open, with tens of millions of
diseased, unskilled and even criminal illegal aliens in our presence. A
decade ago, we charged 10,000 employers with hiring illegals. Last year we
charged only a couple hundred.
Patriotism is out, and even Christmas Cards are now called Holiday
Cards.......just go to the store and find the appropriate section when the
season arrives.
There is no country anymore. A nation without borders and a common history
and culture isn't a nation at all.
Unfortunately, the rest of the world feels differently, and I fear that soon
we will go the way of the Balkans and Ancient Rome......death by
assimiliation.

Yes, that would be nice. Unfortunately for us it is a unilateral idea.
Those of the world who oppose, and it seems lately to be the majority, have
quite a different attitude.
One either understands that the fabric of this country is unraveling, or he
doesn't. Ditto for the reasons it is happening. Our enemies in the past
should have simply waited. In time, it could have all been theirs without
firing a shot.

That's great, alvin! That's what Jesus was teaching when he told the story

of the good Samaritan. Also, the "us" thing, and the wars ending is exactly
what is going to happen when god gets rid of all "these kingdoms" and the
Kingdom that so many ppl have prayed for without even knowing it (in the Lord's
prayer), will be the government that rules the whole earth.
"And he will certainly render judgment among the nations and set matters
straight respecting many peoples. And they will have to beat their swords into
plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword
against nation, neither will they learn war anymore." Isaiah 2:4

That would wrap up all of the problems real quick. There would be a
single, omniscient judge sitting over the entire world. What a great court
system. You wouldn't even have to plea. He already knows the absolute
truth.
Of course he's going to wait a good long time while hundreds of millions
suffer before doing anything...

When I fill out any form that says, "What race are you", I fill in "Human".

I used to always check "Native American" on forms. Then they caught on and
did away with the term.

They've recently added 'Mixed race' to forms here. It's not what it's
intended for but the idea of a pure-bred Englishman is laughable. Maybe,
next time I see it...

We also have the designation Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, which
annoys me. We are all Australian - how can we have a world community when
within each country there are separate races....world community, sorry Alvin

In reality there are a lot of divisions. It's real heart warming to speak
of the united brotherhood of mankind. But the fact is that people believe
very different things, and all too often those things are mutually
exclusive.

People within a country believe different things too, of course,
sometimes quite violently. There are things we all have in common, and
things each of us share with no one. Countries come somewhere in
between. How big a deal each person makes of theirs is another personal
thing. I suppose it's a matter of where you draw the imaginary lines.

my country, my flag, my anthem, our history and our stuggle to become who we

I'm no longer a patriot, Lee. But I do understand that unless we can
distinguish ourselves from the rest of the world, we will begin to view
foreign rights as equal to our own interests and security.
That leads to an inability to resolve inevitable conflict in our favor. In
time, we will cease to exist as an independent nation.

I still am a patriot, if needs be I would die for my country, but only if
she was invaded by an aggressor...I do not think we should be ranging the
world looking for fights....I think that our presense is warranted in Iraq
only because the attack on the world trade centre was an attack on the
world, not just America. Australians died in the wtc as did many people from
other nations. I know there are people that are going to jump up and down
and carry on that the invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with the wtc, so
before you do, let me make myself clear. America is our ally, Britain is our
ally, they requested our help and support, we would be poor allies if we
said no we dont want to be there...I would like to see the soldiers come
home and soon, but then I would also like to see the American, British and
the soldiers of every other nation who are there to go home.

we will begin to
view foreign rights as equal to our own interests and security.

I think we already do see foreign rights as equal to our own interests and
security, in fact I think in some case we see foreign rights as more
important to our own interests and security. And until we have a WTC on
Australian soil, our pollies will continue to run around with thier heads up
thier arses, giving ground to every foreign power to the detriment of
Australia and Australians.

That leads to an inability to resolve inevitable conflict in our
favor. In time, we will cease to exist as an independent nation.

My fears as well, I don't want to see Australia lose her unique identity.

Thats a nice ideological thought, but personally I like the division, I like
my country, my flag, my anthem, our history and our stuggle to become who we
are. I like everything that makes my country different from every other
country in the world. I like our diversity and I like our isolation, now if
only we could stop the rest of the world immigrating here I would be
supremly happy.

What kind of nutball would immigrate to a country with the 14 deadliest
snakes on earth, and the deadliest spiders also?
I'd like to see Australia sometime. But I'm going to wear Kevlar long
johns when I do.

Plenty of them want to come and live here, they hear about the land of
opportunity and golden beaches, invade the place and try to turn it into
thier own little version of where ever the hell they came from.- as far as
our spiders and snakes are concerned, it makes no difference, unfortunately
the critters don't kill enough of the immigrants to stop the tide. And don't
forget our sharks, we had a surfer killed by a white pointer last week, so
now the big brave hunters are going out to catch it and kill it. Poor thing
only doing what is natural. And for that it dies and yet if some numbnut
human had of killed the surfer all the do gooders would be jumping up and
down to save his/her life.....personally I hope the shark evades the
hunters, trouble is they will kill every shark in a 100 kilometre radius
just to make themselves feel good.

Hey what? You think our spiders and snakes are so dumb that they cannot
squeeze up a pants leg....ha your kevlar is only good if our bushmen are
shooting at you.

hm. Haven't heard of that one. I know some of your coast is
patrolled by great whites. Would that be the same thing?

And not necessarily the one who did the damage either.

Same thing, white pointer or great white or their full title Great White
Pointer Shark, prehistoric killing machine, and up to three quarters of our
total coastline is great white territory.

BUT. Australia's spiders are not quite the toughest. China's are.
Thor found an article last night about how a snake got caught in a
spider's web.
(I can't find the article now though)

Thor'd better not go look at that page! When we went up to Mt Diablo
(a couple of hours from here) we inadvertently arrived during
tarantula season. He was not a happy camper. :-)

I am not overly fond of the little blighters myself and I could relate many
a tale of me and spiders, most of them me being terrified in some regard...I
am an arachnephobic of the first order. In fact its only been in recent
years that I could bear to look at a picture of a spider...funnily enough I
did read something on psychological symbolism once and it said something to
the effect that the spider represents mothers and people who are
arachnaphobic have a deep seated fear or hatred of mother, I really dont
know if that is true or not, but funnily enough my arachnephobia started to
lessen, once I had confronted my mother and laid it on the line with her.
