Well, that was fun.
My housemate and I just assembled a double bed and two bedside tables
for our spare room. Took us about 2 hours, but it's done.
Unfortunately the mattress has a tear approx 1.5 inches long in the side
seam and after arguing with the furniture shop on the phone, they still
won't guarantee they can deliver a replacement tomorrow or next Saturday
afternoon (rather than the morning, when Jill and I will be picking up
her Mum from the airport).
If they don't call me back tomorrow, I'll go down there and argue with
the manager in person. We've bought our dining table, coffee table, two
couches and now the bed, mattress and bedsides from there, and I think
we deserve to get a new mattress delivered at a time that suits *us*.
They have good stuff there, I'll probably still go back there again next
time we need something, but I want to get this mattress returned (they
have no problem with that) and a new one delivered (which is the
problem) before I tell *them* that!

Self assembly of stuff is becoming the norm these days,
had to assemble a new vacuum cleaner yesterday. My
feeling is that is has to be packaged into the smallest
possible box. Storage and handling, costs.
Broken bits are a matter to report though. Prolly all
covered under warranty.
