Flow theory = cure for depression |
The standard "treatment" for depression tends to be counselling for
emotional problems, reducing stress, etc. However in my case the major
factor in my recovering from depression and chronic fatigue syndrome
was simply to have more goals and motivation in my life (or, what
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls "Flow"). I only came across his books
after recovering, but I would definitely recommend anyone suffering
from severe depression (especially where there doesn't seem to be
any obvious cause) to look at his work.

Severe?
People have to be kind of mild-to-moderate just to be able to make sound
decisions and entertain worthwhile goals.
Treatment for severe depression includes medication, therapy, counselling
and other interventions for refractory depression, ECT for instance.
Goals are good, but a person has to be well enough. Sometimes people make
very wrong and unhealthy goals, and all the while believing they are living
life as art, or experiencing some kind of clarity, ectasy or serenity, and
that the activity will in some way reward.
