Food for Depression from Biological Psychiatry - uridine & Omega-3 |
<http://www.newstarget.com/006587.html>
"Depression and mental disorders can be prevented and treated with simple
healing foods"
"A new study published in the February 15, 2005 issue of Biological
Psychiatry shows that certain foods are better at treating depression than
antidepressant drugs. The study found that omega-3 fatty acids and foods
high in a compound called uridine were able to reduce the symptoms of
depression as well as or better than three different antidepressant drugs
that were tested."
"Based on the results of this study, it seems silly that anyone would
continue to use antidepressant drugs to try to treat depression when there
are simple healing foods available that do a better job. This is
especially true when considering the potentially dangerous side effects of
antidepressant drugs that are now coming to light, including increased
risk of suicides, violent behavior, and other similar acts of aggression.
But what healing foods in particular are we talking about in this study?
In addition to the omega-3 fatty acids, these health enhancing substances
are found in walnuts, molasses, and fish, according to researchers.
They're also found in many other foods."

I don't know, the list was excerpted from the forbes.com article
mentioning the same study. Does olive oil have omega-3 fatty acids or
uridine in it in forms that are biologically accessible and significant?

oh, lazy lazy me.....
"Olive oil is a great cooking oil because it can take higher
temperatures and has more flavor, although it contains fewer Omega-3's
than either flax or canola oils. On the other hand it is the most
monounsaturated oil and appears to be great for your general health. Be
sure to buy extra virgin oil, cold-pressed, or all the Omega-3 fatty
acids will have deteriorated by the time you eat it. Try and make olive
oil part of your daily diet. This oil does not have to be refrigerated."

Ah, good. Olive oil is yummy.
Looking it up, pumpkin seeds seem to have a lot of it, too. They're kind
of like candy, snack food.

Bananas are on the good list too, I think. And Marmite, and kippers. (Not
necessarily all in the same sandwich). (I think 'canola oil' is known as
'rape-seed oil' to the right of the pond. Flax oil is called 'linseed oil'
over here, and mostly used on cricket-bats).

I've always wondered what those crickets need the bats for.
