Toxic food at dinner on a couple of occasions had me going ballistic
(if you know what I mean) within four hours or so.

I have only had it once , and it hit me in about 1 hour . Bad cottage cheese

Actual food poisoning takes a good 24 hours... unless you're eating a
handfull of bacteria.

there's no simple answer. it depends on the type of virus or
bacteria, and how much of it you got. that said, i've never
heard of it taking longer than a day (in fact, i've never heard
of it taking longer than 16 hours or so). but that's just my
experience, i'm not a physician and don't even play one on usenet,
etc. etc.
