The good thing about being broke is no one expects Xmess presents from
me. I sent out pretty cards and made a couple of crafty things for
friends. Simple acts of caring are much nicer than commercial chaos
and debt.

there was a program on the History Channel a couple years ago that
left me with the notion that Xmas as celebrated in the US has never
been anything *but* a commercial thing.

I was assimilated by the guerilla camp and the notion never
crossed my mind. cosmoline deposits on the inside of a
water-cooled .50 BMG were more important, as was hefting

it is sad. this country is (as far as i have been taught) a place where
ALL people can worship in their own way. so i say YES to a public display
of Christmas. . YES to a public menorah (sp?) .. If you complain that the
mention of Christ or Christmas should be removed then you miss the fu***ing
point of America. We are supposed to have FREEDOM here. So go on and light
the eight candles .. put them in your window .. go on and say Merry
Christmas to anybody you choose.

I really feel strongly about Maria learning religious toleration and Respect
for all faiths. So too, however, we are Catholic and will attend Mass this
Christmas Eve because I want her to honor the birthday of Christ. For us, and
without imposing it on others, Christmas remains a celebration of his bith.

I'll second that. I'm agnostic, not to mention cynical, so the meaning of
Christmas doesn't mean much to me. But it's a tradition that doesn't
offend me in any way.
I spent an hour and a half last night at a Lutheran church watching a
Christmas play. It felt more like six hours. They kept saying "How far is
it to Bethlehem?", and I kept thinking "Are you sure we're going the right
way?"
And then I get struck by science. They are following a star. Some people
may not be aware of this, but following a star will lead you in circles.
Then they are talking about Nazareth - a place for which there is
absolutely no historical record.
And then there was the heartfelt instrumental rendition of Oh Holy Night,
by a woman who was apparently playing the cello for the first time. That
was kind of painful.
But I didn't *have* to go. My wife goes because her mother is in the
choir. I go because that is where my wife happens to be.
If nothing else, you are struck by the sense that you are not alone in
wishing the world was a better place.
