Only a very tiny fraction of USA citizens will actually celebrate Lee's birth,
or even notice.
Today is also Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: his life does deserve
celebration. He led by example. He offered hope for racial harmony. He brought
the "medicine" our country, if not the world, needed.
Decades after his death, the stand he took still inspires people to take the
same stand. I consider that true power. Anyone, regardless of color, who
doesn't feel a great sense of loss because of his death needs to re-examine

Yes, that fact is getting almost as much ink (news coverage) as the day
itself. I think this is the second time the days have coincided, in 17 years
or so. I don't remember the exact number of years.

I always have loved the story of Grant's and Lee's meeting and the mutual
respect and civility each showed the other. Two extraordinary men.
But I would bet, many people do not like thinking of Lee and King on the same
day.

What people will really fail to notice, and the media will almost certainly
never print, is that Robert E. Lee never owned a slave because he believed
that slavery was immoral.
Robert E. Lee did not fight the Civil War to maintain the institution of
slavery. That fact is very uncomfortable for people who like to believe
that the Civil War was about a single issue.

I don't think there are many people who believe in anything King stood for.
Not even Jesse Jackson, who held King as he died. Jackson would rather
defend the actions of criminals and extort money from corporations than do
any real work in race relations.
Race baiting, quotas, etc are not what King was all about. Yet the
advocates of such things never fail to bring up his name.
That reminds me... Did anyone see the last episode of The Apprentice?
Omarosa, a black woman, showed herself to be a true race baiter. After she
made a disparaging comment to another woman, the woman replied "That's the
pot calling the kettle black." Omarosa became (artificially) angry and
accused the woman of making a racist statement, being prejudiced, and not
being able to deal with a "powerful" black woman.
??? "The pot calling the kettle black" is a racist statement? That has
to be the most pathetic attempt at playing the race card I have ever heard.
Omarosa is due to be awarded a PhD by, I believe, April of this year.
Proof positive that a PhD does not guarantee that a person is intelligent.

There is no national holiday to celebrate Robert E. Lee. It's either some
concocted holiday made up by the KKK or some other such racist hate group or
the poster is just plain lying.

I did some googling and found out that a few Southern states do indeed
celebrate the birthdays of Dr. King and General Lee at the same time.
How ironic! But did you know that...
Saturday, 1/17/04, was Popeye's 75th birthday.
And January of 1984 was when the Macintosh was introduced. The first

Oh wow, I had no idea that some states did that. Thanks for the info! I
wonder why no one has ever made an issue of it. Or maybe they did and I
just didn't hear about it.

Does that mean that Sweetpea is 75 also? :-)

I remember that commercial. The one with the Big Brother is watching you
audience of drones listening to Big Brother and then one woman who is not
yet broken is running toward the big screen being chased by these storm
trooper looking dudes and throws this big heavy hammer at the screen and
shatters it. That was quite a commercial. I think it's really cool.

Hmmm...is Sweetpea Popeye's baby? Seems they shouldn't be the same

Title: Re: For those in the USA 19 Jan 2004 10:34:31 AM
Robert E. Lee was an anti-slavery advocate who emanicpated his slaves as
soon as legally able-- he had inherited from his father and they were
entailed and couldn't be freed until 1863 by terms of his father's will.
Lee advocated the induction of freed-slaves into volunteer units of the CSA
Army of Northern Virginia. There were slaves willing to take military
service with the CSA in return for emancipation but Jefferson Davis and the
rest blocked their service.
Lee hoped for the gradual emancipation of slaves before the war, but didn't
believe the federal government (before the 14th Amendment guranteed the
supremacy of the federal over the state) had the authority to grant it. He
certainly believed that forced emancipation would bring on a civil war,
which he of course was opposed to.
Lee turned down command of US forces because he believed that as a Virginian
he would be a traitor to take arms against his home, not because he agreed
with either side.
