Found on PC Magazine Site |
People should be particularly aware of the new pop-up scam where the
window controls are changed so that when you click X to close the
window you are actually clicking on OK to install some onerous
software. Good active antivirus and antispyware software should catch
this error, but most people are probably vulnerable. The software that
gets installed is usually a Trojan, and your machine is turned into a
spambot. Do us all a favor and unplug the Internet at night!

Nope. I run an anti-virus, firewall (both software and hardware)
Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Ad-Aware, Spyware Doctor, Spy Sweeper and
various others and the last four times I ran Spybot it found nothing.
And the rest only find things cause of bloody IE, which I'd love to

They have to print it, otherwise the large portion of their readership
that installs 7 different AV programs, 6 disk defrag utilities, 9
firewalls, 12 "internet security" utility packages...well, those guys
can't read it online. And then there's the 3 hours it takes to get the

Tee-hee.
Yep... I can remember way back when PC Magazine was considered an
important trade rag and the high tech trouble-shooting section had an
article about a mysterious server re-booting problem. The author described
in detail his methodology in tracking down the issue as if he were a very
experienced professional.
It turned out to be an issue with his having his server and a high
capacity HP laser printer plugged into the same power strip.
I think it was at that point that I realized that my entire industry is
full of self-important, arrogant morons who make more money than I do.

Seems like I saw a copy two or three months ago. Really thin, almost
like Time magazine. Quite a change from the good old days. Mostly I
look at it on-line.

Good advice, I think. Also, I've been told to close those pop-ups from
the taskbar (right click on it from the taskbar and select Close)
instead of clicking on the X. Jeanne

the taskbar (right click on it from the taskbar and select Close)
instead of clicking on the X. Jeanne
That makes good sense. I must remember that.

People should be particularly aware of the new pop-up scam where the
window controls are changed so that when you click X to close the
window you are actually clicking on OK to install some onerous

Excellent advice! I do the same thing when using Windows.
