Four weeks to go |
I'm getting paranoid about what books to take. As if I'll read them.

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

I know what you mean...I often never open up a book when I'm on
vacation...but it's comforting,I think,just to know the books are
there,just in case...

My wife will be sunbathing, swimming, or shopping because there are
shops. I may have to do a lot of reading. Maybe I'll take the novel and
a pad of paper.

Just let me make a pile. I like making piles.
I'll get back to you.

Right. So far the piles are:
Non-fiction (one of): Rampton and Stauber; Trust us, we're experts,
Jones; The dark heart of Italy,
Hickman; Courtesans.
'Courtesans' is in the lead, as the easiest to read.
Fiction: Chevalier; The girl with the pearl earring,
Dibdin; Vendetta,
Evanovitch; One for the money,
Faber; The crimson petal and the white,
Hoffman, Stravaganza,
Pratchett, Monstrous regiment.
The Pratchett is the only definite - I've been saving it for months.
The Faber is immense - large format, 833 pages. Looks to be very good,
though. The others are normal sized (and weight).
And, of course, there's the 'Rough Guide to Tenerife', and 'Where to
watch birds in Tenerife', and a bird guide - I'm trying to decide which,
too.

if they're travel books, you'll at least read them on the way
there, and once you've arrived. especially if one is a good
guide book.

Rough Guide to Tenrife, and the Birdwatcher's guide to Tenerife are
definites. It's 'reading books' I'm worrying about.

I guess it depends where you're going. I'm sure the Aneid would
consume several weeks by itself, but it may or may not be appropos.

Tenerife. Not that I could read the Aeneid, the state of my brain.

It's a Canary Island - a group of volcanic islands off the Atlantic
coast of North Africa. Spanish, though the inhabitants may prefer to be
called Canarians or something. There's a big, snow-covered volcano in
the middle, and beaches, and most things in between. Night clubs, bars,
unspoilt villages, and birdwatching.

she did ok. she had some moments of brilliance and some moments (quite
a few) of "screw you mom, i'm sniffing here". we did the novice course
twice. if we could have melded the two runs together, we might have
had a qualifying score :)
i learned a lot, though. next time will be better.
