that gimpshop website. i'm researching it like crazy now. there is even a
book i can order that gives details on how to use the program. even for
basic beginners like me. :)

It's a good *FREE* alternative to Photoshop.
If you don't have Microsoft Word, or have a limited/old pack you might
want to consider OpenOffice too.

There ya go USB2, cool site. You click on Visio, for instance, (a
program to let you chart things like computer networks, or management
structures, or your string & can phone line system) and then it shows
the Open Source equivalent.
You could also even more yourself off of Windows onto a "distribution"
of an alternative way to run your computer, like Ubuntu.
But cross that bridge WAY later...deal with the work you need now and
maybe buy software if you have to because you can't spend the deadline
time learning an entirely new program or the free alternative isn't up
to par on the *specific* requirement you have.
Open Source software is a powerful grassroots movement that does some
things AMAZINGLY well. It does some thing 99% of what $500 would get you
sometimes. But then there's some things that the itch you need scratched
is on your OWN behind and nobody out there has the software solution
either free or $ and then you *program it yourself* ;) and be kind and
give it back to the world.
*Don't* make the mistake of thinking that since you know a
hammer...everything's a nail.
(I've seen way too many people try to turn Excel from a number cruncher
spreadsheet into a database.)
