Object: Furnace
My furnace scares me. I have a York furnace and it has what they call an
igniter which burns out from time to time.
That was never so when I was growing up; the furnaces had pilot lights that
never went out. Now the igniters must be replaced regularly about every 2-4
years in my experience. It's normally expensive to have it done, especially
on an emergency basis, but I found a source for the igniters online and I
replace it myself anymore. I keep several spares in stock so I'm prepared.
It takes me about 30 minutes to replace it due to the bad positioning. I
have to remove several other parts first and it's still hard to get to.
I keep worrying about it burning out while we're gone for a few days or
longer. Will I come home to burst water pipes? Sounds like a ***** poor
design to me.

Is it electronic ignition? if so, the flame sensor/ignitor is only used
when a call for heat is sent from the room thermostat. If it is just a
standing pilot, then a thermocouple may be what is causing your problem,
an overly adjusted pilot flame will shorten the life of such. 2-4 years does
not seem to be right, whatever the situation is.
Another type is like a ceramic block with a glow type plug on it? They are
very fragile and easy to damage, same deal as above though, only on
demand from the room stat.

Is it electronic ignition?

I'm not sure what you mean there. If you're asking if it's a gas pilot
light or am electrical spark, no. It's a spiral wound carbon glow coil.
When the thermostat calls for heat, the furnace computer energizes the coil
which then glows almost white hot. The coil is sitting off to the side but
in a gas stream, and the result is igniting the gas. Once the flame
thermocouple senses the burning flame, the igniter is deenergized.
The biggest problem isn't that it glows white hot for a short period, the
problem is that the igniter coils sits in gas flow and so the flame. The
main burner flame slowly erodes the carbon coil and eventually eats
completely though the coil.
I've also had coils crack and so become electrically open.
The first igniter (I bought this townhouse new in 1994) lasted 4 years and I
called for service to fix it. I asked him about it and he said igniters
lasting 3-4 years was entirely normal for this York furnace. I was pissed
at the time knowing I would have to go through this nonsense every few
years.

if so, the flame sensor/ignitor is only used
when a call for heat is sent from the room thermostat.

Yes, the igniter and flame sensor are different parts. When called for by
the thermostat, the computer engages an exhaust fan first. Assuming no
backpressure from the exhaust, the igniter kicks in. After a few seconds,
the gas kicks in. Once the flame sensor senses flame, the computer turns
the igniter off. If no flame is sensed, everything shuts down with the
exception of the main blower fan which I assume is to clear any accumulated
gas. Then a LED flashes a code which the manual calls "lockout". You have
to power down the furnace (reboot) to get it to try again.

If it is just a
standing pilot, then a thermocouple may be what is causing your problem,
an overly adjusted pilot flame will shorten the life of such.

I've watched it and everything seems to be working properly. The furnace
cycles about 4-6 times per hour which I gather is normal. I do not see
excessive cycling. It turns on when the thermostat calls for heat and shuts
down when the house temperature hits the thermostant setting.

2-4 years does
not seem to be right, whatever the situation is.

My first one lasted 4 years. Every one since then has been 2-3 years. The
repair guy said that was normal. I call it a horrible design.

Another type is like a ceramic block with a glow type plug on it? They
are
very fragile and easy to damage, same deal as above though, only on
demand from the room stat.

I don't think this one is ceramic. It has the appearance of being
compressed carbon. There's a picture of part "Round Hot Surface Ignitor

Yeah, I see the one you have, not of good quality by the look of it, and
like Franz mentioned there are upgrades, model numbers below look more
durable and would be a retro fit kit with all hardware required.

Hey, but you just told me the other day I don't suffer with depression, or

IG102" on page:

You cats and your gas....brave, if you ask me. I have oil heat. But
you guys know the ins and outs of it, gas no less.
I burned the hell out of both arms yesterday putting logs in the WB
stove. I do it every year. So I got a long leather glove out and
will use it. The stove is in the solarium, which has a sloping
cathedral ceiling. So I have to get the thing cooking, then open the
doors, turn on the overhead tropical fan, and it warms the entire
house. My oil guy is gonna expect me to have used more. Using 125
gallons a month, at 2.39 a gallon. If I didn't have to heat the house
to warm up my friend and a sick cat, I'd never use the furnace. Plus,

Well, I don't know about being brave, but I can say I've never burned myself
on my gas furnace or clothes drier. But my gas stove is another story. I
have burned myself there.

With this very mild winter, my worst month this year has been $80. But last
year was another story. My worst month last year was $250, but just for one

Yeah, I'm getting screwed. It was 1.19 a gallon 2 years ago. 1.59
last year.

Yeah, I had a treeman cut a huge oak limb over the house, so that's
seasoning for next years whacking. This house has a wood burning
FURNACE in the basement, I had them unhook it. The place was built in
'74, gas crisis/embargo and all. Might hook it up again someday.
Pain in the hooters, I bet, feeding it 5 times a day. And no exterior
door to get in the cellar (the add on solarium buried it).
Carrying wood, good for the biceps. Yeah, I'm huge. If I could just
carry it on my gut....I'd be Batman.
