Good Bye but hey Dave that what ya wanted! |
Did you know that you have a member that chases people out of your
group
I came in a couple of time to post and the second time I ran in to Dave
the rude.
I put fourth a honest post and got back nothing but crap. Right now I
don't need that in my life. Especially tonight when I am feeling really
really low and now angry because of him. I am so glad that I could be
there for his amusement when I was really looking for assistance and
suggestions from others in the group and instead got baited into and
stupidity war with a very cruel individual. So I will do what I do best
go back into the darkness when it comes to this topic. To those of you
I didn't get a chance to meet I sorry. God Bless. Tink

Dave (%) is frequently rude. Don't bother with him. Have you discovered
the kill-file on your net software yet?
Of course, if you meant David - he's generally well-meaning, but not
always in charge of his fingers. He's more seriously ill than most of
us, which is why he frequently gets attacked.
Kill-filing good as far as it goes, which is not very far; whenever
anyone else replies, you get to see the original.

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

Oh, I don't see Alan doing that.
How do you determine who is more,

Sometimes by reading of the medical conditions they themselves report
having been diagnosed with. Sometimes just by reading their descriptions
of how they feel and what their lives are like.
Playing the diagnosis game as part of tactical warfare, to insult or
intimidate people, is fucked up. Taking people at their word about
certain things and accepting that some medical conditions are more
serious than others is not.

Of course, that also means that whiners get more attention than those

Anyway, I don't know what "whiners" you have in mind, I was thinking of
people who discuss the fact that they suffer from some form of
psychosis. I don't think presenting yourself with a diagnosis of
schizophrenia and talking about what it's like to live with it makes one
a "whiner" or counts as an example of someone saying "I'm sicker than
you are because I say so".

I very clearly wrote that I wasn't saying David was a whiner.
Dilemma isn't the right word. I just couldn't find the right one at
the moment. So I went with what I had at hand.
Some people (no, we're not talking David -- got it?) write in great
depth about their problems, psychological and otherwise. Some people
have as many if not worse but keep it to themselves. That's what I
mean by drawing a conclusion from "I'm sicker than you are because I
say so." Just because the squeaky wheel squeaks doesn't mean it's the
one that needs the grease the most.
That's all.

If people write about their problems here, they're going to get
responses; if they don't, they won't, at least not about those
problems. What alternative approach are you suggesting, some kind of
community outreach? It's a discussion group, you can't discuss what
isn't discussed.
Quite a while ago, I think mid-2005, I woke up one miserable morning and
made a rather agonized post about a horrible period of depression I was
going through. I was very much a "squeaky wheel", and I got "the grease"
in the form of a number of people being very kind and supportive while I
went through the hell of trying to find a new doctor. If I hadn't made
that post, I wouldn't have gotten that support here, but I couldn't very
well complain about not getting it, could I?
It's an online discussion group. The grease goes to the squeakers
because all we have to go on is the sound of their virtual squeaking. I
honestly don't understand what you're objecting to.

Didn't this kick off with Gayle taking exception to Alan's statement
that David is among the sickest of those here? *I* thought it did.
So it's not a matter of my objecting (nor was it a matter of my
accusing people of lying). I've tried many routes with you to try to
explain my position: That I believe that just because someone is
self-reporting in a fashion that makes them sound like the sickest
person here doesn't make it the case. It *might* be the case, but it
also might not. That's all I've been trying to say. No more, and no
less.
So...at this point, you either get what I'm trying to say or don't,
and if you don't by now, then my endlessly repeating myself won't help
a bit. I think this horse is way past dead.

True dat. Therefore, Alan *might* be right, but he also might not. I
don't think anyone, including Alan, would have much of a problem with
that analysis. And if we're going to take exception to everything that
anyone says that *might* be wrong, this is going to be one "exceptional"

I *think* I understand what you're trying to get at, the broader
point, if there is one. And I think I understand why it's hard to
articulate, and the only way that I can do that is by telling a story.
My sister is a squeaky wheel. She's had about every treatment for
depression known to man, and she's a drug addict (recovering, one
hopes), and she's had a host of other problems, including the part
where she completely screwed up her medical career and had her
children taken away for a while. My mother is totally obsessed with
how sick she is and with helping her, and it's in part because she
demands help, and because she has this weird kind of faith that she
can totally fall apart and someone else will pick up the pieces.
I'm pretty much incapable, most of the time, of saying, I am
absolutely desperate, and I need help. I have absolutely zero faith
that anyone will help me, and I went through what was virtually a
complete breakdown without telling *anyone* about it. And I went to
work every day, and I pretended that everything was ok, and at the
same time, I spend a huge part of my day trying to keep myself from
jumping off a cliff, literally. But I would have died before I would
have told anyone.
My point, which I'm hoping was your point, too, is that, maybe my
sister is sicker than me (well, she certainly is now, but that's
beside the point). And maybe she's not/wasn't. But if you believe
the self-report, she's the sickest thing on the block, and in
contrast, I must be incredibly healthy.
I see the same thing here, although I think it's absolutely
unavoidable in a usenet group, and Mark is completely right about
this. Being a squeaky wheel is essentially the appropriate thing to
do... although some of us don't do it well. But, if there's a degree
of illness contest... which I certainly hope that there isn't... I
often think that it's the quiet ones we should be worrying about, not
the babbling brooks.

It would be interesting, though, to know how people "rate" themselves,

actual illness.
Hmm, maybe I'll set up a Zoomerang thang. I need to find out what they

It would be even more interesting, hypothetically, if you could then
place people on a scale of actual illness vs. perceived illness, and
correlate that somehow with, I don't know, noise level for lack of a
better term.
And yes, I know, there's no scientific scale of illness, and I don't
necessarily think that it's a good thing to shut up when you feel like
hell, etc. I just have a little personal bias toward thinking that
the squeakier the wheel, the more it's already greased. Or something
like that.

It would be even more interesting, hypothetically, if you could then
place people on a scale of actual illness vs. perceived illness, and
correlate that somehow with, I don't know, noise level for lack of a
better term.
And yes, I know, there's no scientific scale of illness, and I don't
necessarily think that it's a good thing to shut up when you feel
like hell, etc. I just have a little personal bias toward thinking
that the squeakier the wheel, the more it's already greased. Or
something like that.
Well, let's all squeak just a little bit...
Announcing the 2006 Unofficial ASD "How Ill Are You?" poll!

Zoomerang's free service is limited to 100 respondents, but that ought
to be enough.

Can I be the one who points out that since you set this up you are
trying once again to exert control over the whole group?
Or has that role already been spoken for?

No, you're the first (today), so be my guest! I'm actually applying to
the ASD Board of Directors for the position of Chief NetKKKop, and
wanted this for my resumé. Not only that, but I get 23 cents and a
DepressedChick® for each clickthrough.

Maybe I'm just being perverse, but I would have loved to have added a
second question: "How ill do you think others perceive you to be?" I
think the contrast, if there is one, might prove interesting.

Then you have to decide whether it is meant to mean how I am
perceived by ASDers or by outsiders.
Perverser than you.

Thanks, Nina. You got it.
You're a gem.
