Has a Water Event |
Came back from a week long Oregon trip, house smelled funny. Checking
around, things seemed wet. I found that the angle valve in the
upstairs bathroom had been leaking. Flooded upstairs bathroom and
adjacent bed room, downstairs bathroom, living room, kitchen. Quite a
mess. Insurance company sent a handyman to help get started cleaning
up, he said he vacuumed up 20 to 30 gallons of water. Carpet will
need replaced, as will some of the underlying floor. That means
getting everything out of the house.
I thought of just calling a moving and storage company and telling
them to take everything, but I have aquariums and no one will touch
them.
I got 7 of them moved out to the garage today, a few bigger ones still
to go, but a friend said he would help with those.
I'm tired and I hurt. I had other things that I would rather be
doing.
Not an earth shattering problem, just an excuse to complain.

oh that totally sux, charles. i used to work for state farm (20+ years) and
it was fairly common for people to leave town and come back to find their
house flooded. i don't know why that stuff always happens when people are
gone! i remember one poor family came home to their 2 story house, opened
the front door, and found the 2nd story sagging down into the middle of the
first floor. the bathroom had leaked upstairs and filled the 2nd floor with
water until eventually the entire floor just sagged down. it was a real
mess!!!
sorry for the tremendous amount of trouble this will cause you. :(

Thanks. I'm with State Farm as it happens. They used to have a
reputation of being a bit more expensive but also they paid off their
claims. I filed a claim with them back in 1970, hope they don't see
me as a persist ant problem.

geez, if you haven't filed a claim with them since 1970, you have NOTHING to
fear. the problems come when you file 3 or more "non weather related"
claims within 3 years. but even then, the first thing State Farm usually
does is have you agree to increase your deductible. State Farm is still
excellent about paying off on claims, so you shouldn't have any problems.

But a hefty expense, too, no? What a hassle. Have you contacted a
remediation service yet? Any potential problems within the walls?
(mold and stuff).

There'll be some expense, insurance will cover some of it. The carpet
has been in place for about 20 years, so it can be considered
amortized.
We tore it out to let the walls dry, tore out a bit of the ceiling for
the same purpose. I expect the insurance company will have someone
look at the amount of damage. The handyman who was here has done some
of this type work for them, he took some pictures.

that depends on your policy (and the insurance laws of the state that you
live in). it is very possible that your carpet will NOT be depreciated if
you have a "full replacement cost" policy. but again, that depends on the
state you live in. in the 2 states that i've worked for State Farm in (Tenn
and Texas), they only depreciated the carpet if you chose not to replace it.
in other words, they would just cut you a check for the "value" of the
carpet and you could do what you wanted with the money. but if you intend
to actually replace the carpet, then State Farm paid the full cost of
replacing it (minus your deductible, of course). so, find out if you have
a full replacement cost policy or not. you may be pleasantly surprized at
all the new stuff you could end up getting. :)

Thanks. By depreciated, I meant from my standpoint. I've got my use
from it, can consider it a good value for what I got out of it. I'll
replace it, don't see any better option.
When I entered my recycled singlehood, I went to a home decorating
class, partly to learn a bit, partly to meet people. The instructor
told us that folks in California usually buy cheap carpet and change
it after about five years just for style, that in other parts of the
country people expect a carpet to be kind of a permanent thing.
I just set it on fire. I had placed an aquarium light on the floor,
while I was out of the house the timer came on and started burning the
carpet. Just a small spot, about a half dollar size, and it's out
now.
Also put a chunk of glass in the garbage, when the truck dumped it the
glass fell on the street, so I had to clean up the street. Broke an
aquarium messing around with them.
Bad things come in 333s don't they?
Whatever happens won't hurt me badly, it's just a waste of time when I
could be out looking at flowers.

It was, today in sunny, nice. they say we might get a bit of rain
this evening, but right now I couldn't ask for better weather.
Well, it's only 70 out, I usually like it better warmer.
I saw in the paper San Fran had a tornado, that came as a surprise.
Probably a surprise to the people there too.
