Object: Have you given up on birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays?
x-no-archive: yes
Maybe it amounts to withdrawal from society and rudeness, but I find
the hoopla and expectation around holidays that you WILL buy a card or
gift for loved ones or that you WILL show up at a family feast so
irritating that I have entirely cut holiday observance out of my life.
To be fair to my "loved ones," I made it clear to them that I no
longer expected any cards or gifts from them either.
It has gratifyingly simplified things. It has been over 20 years since
I travelled farther than a few miles to attend a Thanksgiving meal,
which means that if I do bother to show up, it isn't my immed. family,
all of whom live far away. I detest turkey anyway, and have no urge to
share the trains or planes with seemingly half of the AmeriKKKKan
sheeple. I have not bothered to buy a gift for any adult in that
time, which means countless hours saved from agonized, joyless
browsing in some putrid store. And likewise, my "loved ones" have
been saved that time spent shopping for ME.
This year, in fact, I was travelling on my birthday (a vacation trip)
and did not even notice that my birthday had passed. I find the idea
of a birthday an egotistical and pointless celebration if you are an
adult, anyway. Children, and I was once a child, should have fun, a
party, gifts. But if you're an adult, get over it. A birthday, like a
New Year's Eve, is only a reminder that you're one step closer to the
grave. Those days should be ignored and stuffed into the closet. And
why demand presents on christmas or valentine's day either? If you're
a working adult, buy it yourself.

I do the same thing, but I didn't bother to tell my relatives not to
send me stuff. They still send stuff, but I ignore it. I toss cards
without reading them and trash presents without even opening them. I
figure the relatives can at least entertain the fantasy that I actually
receive and enjoy the stupid ***** they send.
