Earlier this week my brother failed a treadmill stress test. Yesterday they
scoped out the arteries of his heart and found one was 90% blocked. When
they found the blockage they ballooned the artery and installed a stent to
keep it expanded. They gave him before and after x-ray pictures and the
difference is amazing.
After a precautionary overnight stay in the hospital, he's home and doing
well. He has permission to return to work Monday if he takes it easy.
The doc told him that the blocked artery is called the "widow maker". My
brother is about 1 1/2 years younger than I am.

that stuff's scary, especially in someone younger than you. my
father had angioplasty, then a triple bypass, recently had a
heart valve replaced due to a congenital issue. his first
heart attack was when he was five years younger than i am now.
have you been checked by a cardiologist? might be a good idea,
if only to dispell some unease.

Yep, scary stuff. My dad has his first heart attack at 45 and died 7 years
later. He managed to make it to age 52, 3 years younger than I am now.

Yes, but it was a while ago. At least five years I think. Maybe longer.
They did the cardiac catheterization and declared me to be fine at the time.
I have major factors working against me. My dad died of heart disease. I
smoked for 25 years. I'm being treated for high blood pressure and
extremely high cholesterol (345 before they started me on drugs). I'm
overweight and sedentary.
I'm planning on asking my doc for a new stress test the next time I see him.

my father's first heart attack was at 40. somehow, he's made
it to 80 and is still going. the cardiologist i saw last year
said that even with a strong family history (everyone in my
dad's family until now has died young of heart disease), my
risk factors are low, though i should exercise more. my bp's
ok except when i'm on certain meds, and my cholesterol's good,
since i've been working on my diet.
maybe we should start an exercise program together :-) i'll
tell you on which days i've walked, and you tell me. maybe
that'll keep us going.

I probably wouldn't be able to keep up my end of that bargain for very long.
I've had periods when I've done amazingly well, but I always fall back in to
old habits eventually. I've tried every trick in the books but it never
works for very long.
I find the elliptical trainer to be excruciatingly boring, and I can't walk
outside in the winter time. The cold here is just too painful and the
winter snow and ice makes it dangerous. Winter breaks my spirit every time.

mall walking? at least it's warm. my local indoor mall has a
morning walkers group. they open the mall early for them.
i'm waiting for a new pair of hiking shoes to come, then i'll be
walking outdoors at least 3 or 4 times a week. that's my promise
to myself, anyway.

Probably the only time I could do that would be once or twice on the
weekends. Better than nothing though.

That's excellent Lisa. Sounds like the result of a New Year's resolution!

actually, it's justification for buying a new pair of shoes.
