Object: Hey Alan
We went canoing for a little while today at a local pond and
came across a long-eared owl in a snag being harrassed by a
bunch of blue jays. It seemed to be bothered more by the
screaming jays around it than by our presence about 100 feet
away on the water. Poor owl was really distressed. Nice moment
for us, though.

Joe recently finished making major repairs to a canoe that we'd
neglected for nearly 20 years. This was her maiden voyage with
her new skin and replacement parts. It didn't leak and we had a
nice paddle.

Crows do not like raptors or owls anywhere near their nests. I've seen
carrion crows giving a buzzard an aerial beating, and ravens are
supposed to do the same to golden eagles. Jays are very reclusive here,
but any sized bird will join in mobbing an owl. I'd have liked to have
seen it.

Blue jays here are a fairly large, bold, raucus bird. I've seen
one dive-bombing cats. They were not at all pleased to have the
owl around, and the feeling was obviously mutual.

They sound more like our magpies (that's your black-billed magpie)
than our jays. Carrion crows have been known to kill magpies for sharing
a territory at breeding time.
