you're not responsible for that individual. you're responsible for your
behaviour with that individual, which was malicious and unprovoked. mental
illness doesn't exuse you for carrying on like a total jerk, i don't care
how stressed you are.

you're not responsible for your hair growing. you're only responsible for
whatever you may choose to do or not do about it, which tends to be a
morally neutral area where the question of responsibility isn't that
important.

Being psychotic means you lose control. Your input may be wrong, like
hearing voices, or your response may be unusual, like acting on what
your voices say, or both. Hospitalization is a common response, as is
micro-management of medication, I believe.

Have been a little stressed lately, with hearing voices, and
dealign with parents. It must be in the air. Am sorry about
the
situation here last night, I do feel somewhat responsible for
this individual. Thanks to all those who are lurking and can
help.
you're not responsible for that individual. you're responsible
for
your behaviour with that individual, which was malicious and
unprovoked. mental illness doesn't exuse you for carrying on
like
a total jerk, i don't care how stressed you are.
Bollocks! Of course mental illness affects people's behaviour.
it does, but they remain responsible for it. it's axiomatic to
remaining free to behave without external restraint.
Being psychotic means you lose control. Your input may be wrong,
like hearing voices, or your response may be unusual, like acting
on
what your voices say, or both.
yup.
Hospitalization is a common response, as is
micro-management of medication, I believe.
those are two forms external restraint might take.
there are a lot more than two
take it away, mr. music.
you know i have the ability but not the patience ,
'i could write windows full of this and that , just to say , " no "
but why bother typing a 500 word or more essay in a place ,
where at best it will only get browsed , but i'll tell you this ,
from my experiences external restraints can take more than two forms
indeed they can.
sorry , in my browsing your original reply , '
i skipped over what you really said '

How can someone who is not connected to reality make free choices? You
have to be rational to be free. If you think you have a large tapeworm
in your stomach that tells you what to do, how are you supposed to make
rational choices? Yeah, medication helps, but my understanding of this
illness is that it's pretty damn wicked, and going off meds is not
uncommon. If we had a cure for it, they would be cured, and we wouldn't
be discussing this. I don't think they behave they way they do because
it's a rocking good time. It's a tragic, heartbreaking disease, at
least the limited aspects that I've seen.

i have no argument with any of that. but the fact remains, however
heartbreaking the illness and its outcome may be... if we can't responsibly
control behavior in ourselves which harms others, we have to submit to
external restraint. so long as we claim to be autonomous and free, we're
responsible for everything we say and do.
the loss of self-responsibility is illness' greatest victory. i think
there's no certain road back after that, if there's any road at all. so when
i give someone ***** for behavior which i find offensive, i do it with the
assumption... which i invite them to share... that they are
self-responsible. because if they aren't, then it's not them i want to talk
to but their caregivers and legal guardians.
