If you're running Internet Explorer you can empty the cached files. The
cookies too if you're paranoid...but then you have to log into a bunch
of sites again.
Often you'll find a bunch of strangely named folders in what on Win2k
would be c:\WinNT\"strange folder name here" these are put in by
updates, never deleted them myself but they might be needed for the next
round of MS security hole spackling.
There's also a Temp folder in c:\winnt, have a look through it and see
if anything looks like junk. Restart before you pitch things though or
you may be tossing an in use scratch file.
Aborted Word docs can leave behind some junk, I don't have a Windows box
up so I don't recall the extension they use.
You can run a find for *.log *.tmp *.old *.001 *.00(n)
Companies are so lazy and it's not in their interest so software
*removal* falls into a "we don't give a ***** bin." It can also be pretty
difficult for them to track across different versions of their product
because they all install with every gun blazing, spraying *.DLL files
everywhere and owning the registry like a prison *****.
Most of them have such a high opinion of themselves that they don't even
remove the folder for, say, Acrobat Reader out of the Program Files
directory. Best case scenario is they empty it but leave their graffiti
or they empty it of all but a few files.
It's a ***** but if you're running Windows and actually want to change
your system around...try some software, basically just use the damn
thing. You'll wind up wanting a reinstall every 6-12 months. It's like
changing the oil in a way.
I fixed a computer for a friend, same media files, same applications,
same settings... But he had gone about 2 years on the box and his 120GB
drive was around 300MB free. After we rebuilt it, it had over 30GB now
available. This was a pretty extreme case (a lot of the ***** had been
done to the machine by his room-mate) but I've seen it make that much
difference.
Now if you ever make me type this much again...I'll need to hear another
story of a job as interesting as the carb cleaning place. ;)

pine cones sounds pretty interesting, were you just trying to copper

If you can get ahold of norton system works, way back I had
luck with clean sweep. If you need space, hard drives are
so cheap, I'd just get a new one.

Norton can make a mess worse. 40, 80, and 120 GB drives are getting so
cheap. I think the sweet spot is at about 120 or 160. Above that the
drives command too much of a premium.
