$17 million per year (if you include that up front $50 million fee
just to get Japan to agree to release him)...Is Daisuke Matsuzaka
worth every penny? The Red Sox aren't playing around on this one.

The $50 million bid, as far as I know,
was just how much they'd be willing to
pay him and it gave them the 'right' to
negotiate. There wasn't a separate fee
to get him released, just an
understanding of what the contract might
be worth, at a minimum. All of it goes
to Matsuzaka. And his Agent From Hell,
Scott Boras. They've got all these
marketing agreements in Japan now and
will recoup some of the $ that way.
But, no matter if he's worth it in wins
(15? 18?), they let Damon go (mistake)
and Manny may go, too. Which will make
Ortiz worth nothing because everyone
will just pitch around him. Without
hitting, the Red Sox may look like fools
on this deal. JD Drew? Puh-leeze.
They're going after Clemens, too, who
might want to finish in Boston. For
sentimental reasons, I hope they do. But
we still ain't got a closer. The basic
answer to yer query is that I have no
freakin' idea.
