Object: Hey I am new here
I have a long history of depression and now I have been diagnosed with
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. I also suffer from Anxiety disorders.
These disorders are taking a toll on my family. The doctor put me on
Prozac to control PMDD during the luteal Stage of the Cycle. I am
scared to take it because of the horror stories about Prozac. My
children are still young toddlers and my boyfriend works quite a bit.
So I don't want to strees out my family and friends anymore than I
have. Please someone help me.

It sounds like you took a step towards someone helping you by being
prescribed the prozac. It's a well understood drug, have you discussed your
concerns with your doctor?

Yes I have and he said that the Prozac can cause a drug induced
psychosis that can be treated with Anti-psychotics. He said that
basically I risk the psychosis or keep going in a down ward spiral.
What scares me is the knowing of when should I stop taking the prozac?
maybe I need to try and find some positive things about prozac. It's
almost as if I can't shake the fear of bringing harm to myself, family,
or friends.

Well, that would be a worst case scenario...as in you're almost lottery
lucky for that kind of reaction.
Take a look at page 19 if you want a breakdown of side-effects:
http://pi.lilly.com/us/prozac.pdf
The most common reported side-effect is nausea. That's across the board for
all indicated uses.
The other thing to consider is there are a lot of drugs in the same class as
Prozac but much newer and with much fewer side-effects.
But, I'm just a random guy on the internet and not an MD (especially no a
psychiatrist who is really the person you NEED to be talking to about these
kind of drugs, not the family doctor). Although I've taken a LOT of
different psych meds, and none of them have ever sent me into psychosis,
especially not SSRI drugs which take 4-6 weeks to be effective anyway.

Just stay actively engaged, you're the one taking it...educate yourself,
insist on the best care, the most options, and be patient.
Nom De Plume, one of the regular posters has put together a pretty decent
guide to these drugs. You'll have to learn the terminology of the field -
just as with *everything* else.

It's hard to say what could happen if you should go off it. It's been a
tried and true med for a long time, but I'm sure other's have had some
problems with it, and successes as well. I didn't have much trouble
going off it at the time, but it was replaced with another
anti-depressant.
You could also check into the different versions of prozac, there's one
that you can take once a week, for example.

Welcome to ASD :))
I'm glad that you are taking steps to deal with your illness; that is the
most important thing.
As the others have said, don't be scared by the 'worst case' possibilities,
they are very rare. Prozac is a widely used medication, and the most
likely thing is that it will help a bit, with tolerable side-effects. If
it doesn't help enough, or you are unlucky and get nasty side effects,
there are plenty of alternative medications.

Listen to your body and not the horror stories. If something seems to
be going wrong, talk to your Dr.
I've been on and off Prozac for most or the last 20 years. It is one
of the safest medications out there. Asprin is scary too, if you read
some of the things about it.

i've known several people taking prozac. none had a psychotic
reaction. the only problem i've seen with it is that it doesn't
help everyone who tries it. of course, this is just based on a
few cases, mine included. it didn't help me, though other
medication did.

Ty I have now started the treatment and I am doing good for now but it
is the first month so I won't really know how well it will work or not
for the next few weeks.

That's not unusual. The "horror" stories are relatively
unusual, and some of them may not have happened.
You can't tell until you try it. Zoloft did various
good things for me, but kept me asleep all the while.
Lexapro was just weird, but we realized it in a few days.
Lots of ppl have been really helped by both of these
as well as Prozac. They are all the same class of Rx,
SSRIs.

Not helping is by far the more common adverse outcome.
Sounds like you have a pdoc who will listen to what
you say. I'd say it's worth a try.
And you can keep us posted about what happens. That's
why a.s.d. (and a.s.d.m.) exist.

I had *increased anxiety* when I had taken it. I realized it was just
not the medication for me.
Celexa seems to agree with me.
