If I use postfix instead of sendmail do I still need dovecot?

Yes, unless you want to use Cyrus or Courier instead. I use Cyrus.

Yes, unless you want to use Cyrus or Courier instead. I use Cyrus.
So postfix is just the MTA like sendmail I take it.

Yes, but it's not some other stuff built into it content filtering,
greylisting, alternate database backends like MySQL and PGSQL, quotas,
better performance and security. It's a lot easier to configure too.

That's why I don't even bother with sendmail anymore. It's one of the
first things that gets replaced when I setup a computer.
