Hey Slunky (trying opera again) |
The barber of Seville.
No, I re-downloaded Opera. I posted to no one in particular last week
that it was giving me problems (some logging and tracking java pop up,
constantly) I removed it, but it hasn't done that yet (I haven't
restarted yet) One thing is certain. It is fast. I have cable, and
the internet loads for me as slow as dial up. Except downloads of big
files, gets like a meg per second. If Opera loads USA Today, it'll
win. Because I have repeatedly tried to click that paper from links
and have never had it on my screen, ever. Ten minutes is too long.
i never did buy that new monitor. I found a ton of photos, so I'm
gonna get a scanner/printer/fax. Had problems with the last one,
finally trashed it. But I need one. Probably HP again, unless
someone recommends otherwise. (Canon makes one too, I think...)

I've been happy with several Epson scanners over the years. They kept
their drivers nice, small and unobtrusive (something's stupid bloated
*wrong* when the default HP driver install for a simple printer/scanner
is 250MB!!)
I had a Perfection 640U up until about a year and a half ago when I had
to do some moving and forgot to "lock" the lamp head after unplugging it
and so now it doesn't know "where" things are when you try to use it.
Epson printers: I've seen some really pretty output from them, but they
sucked mad amounts of ink.

That's nothing compared to Lexmark. I had a printer/scanner/copier and
the software for it too up 1GB. All so it could talk to you and have
really ugly graphics.

I love those ***** ink monitors too that simply guess how much ink
was consumed on printing jobs that passed through the driver. No actual
monitoring of the cartridge, and then software locking them when "dry".
I've used Lexmarks, but only the models that cost less than a pair of
ink carts for another printer.
That waste really bugs me, but it's the ***** they pull.

Lexmark should calculate how much environmental damage is done by
millions of $30 printers going to the dump.

I bought my printer/scanner/copier for $10, and spent $60 on ink for it,
and then the print heads clogged up in a month and I had to spend
another $30 on a new color cartridge, and then the print heads clogged
on that, so I tossed the printer and bought a new Canon.

laser is more economical for simple b/w printing. last time i checked,
entry level models were less than $90.
dot matrix are $150 or more new (priced for business), but cost 0.1 cent
per page + paper costs.

some models of inkjet are supposedly close to 5 cents per page.
printing out a 200 page book is $10.
i haven't found a decent monitor for reading large docs.

Opera is so fast, it blows my mind. It takes a little while to get used
to it, but once you've mastered it, you'll never go back. I like the
fact that I can search just from the address bar, or read my rss feeds.

I've got ten RSS feeds I subscribe to, and it just pops up a little box
when a new message comes up. I track news, software updates, and virus
definitions with them.
