I've been through this with Sammy who was gone for 10 days once. She
had no tags, no chip and is shy as hell. I checked all the shelters
and distributed lost flyers to all the mailboxes in my area. Finally
the lady across the street spotted her sneaking food she put out for
other strays. I waited on her porch and right on cue, Sam's head pops
around the building corner. I call her name and she freaks and we
have a happy reunion. The point is she was never more than 100 feet
from my front door (she was not an outside cat and just got freaked
out and disoriented).
Of course now she's chipped and collared and all that.
Consider offering a reward, that gets the kids very involved.
Walking around calling her name didn't bring her out even though she
had to hear me."

of course! i think it took 10 days. i had completely given up!
Now, is she chipped
yet (you should feel guilty here if she isn't, LOL)...
no chip, but she does wear a collar now. :)
