Do you mean in the 'i'm vacationing in vegas' sense or in the Nicholas
Cage character in the movie sense?

He *did* accomplish his goal.
I guess the writer died of alcoholism not long after the movie was approved
for production.

OMG, i had no idea until i read this just now!
I looked it up on imdb.com:
Date of death: April 11,1994 (Suicide) (?!!!)
and then this in 'Trivia':
" Author John O'Brien, on whose autobiography this movie is based,
committed suicide two weeks after the movie went into production.
Director Mike Figgis contemplated abandoning the project, but decided
the film would make a good memorial for O'Brien."
That is just too sad.
The very idea that this movie is a true story is devastating.
