Yippee! I'm home again. My flight landed about 10 pm and I was back in my
own bed by midnight.
All in all it was a very successful trip. What I feel bad about is my
terrible memory for names. I must have met a hundred people and can only
remember the first names of a very small handful. There's something wrong
with that part of my brain but there's nothing I can do about it.
They told me that the new hire class used to be 2 weeks long and they
reduced it to one week. There was still a fair amount of downtime but not
bad enough to become unbearable. The only bad part was being shuffled from
room to room. Our class was bottom on the priority list so we were
constantly being bumped from our meeting rooms. We changed rooms an average
of 3-4 times a day for the whole week. But that was mostly a minor
inconvenience. The class accomplished everything that was planned for us.
It was a great introduction to the company and products.
The flight home was smooth. I left in 50 degree weather and arrived home to
14 degree weather. Brrrrrrrr. I'm definitely back in Chicago winter
weather now.
Bruce.

Thanks Lisa. It's a bit warmer here now, 21 degrees. I won't be breaking
out the suntan lotion anytime soon, but that's better than 14 or 4.

If you really believe there's nothing
you can do about it, then you're
probably right. But I think there are
some things to help. One thing I do is
keep a pocketful of business cards and
exchange them with everyone I meet under
the conditions you were in.
Or, I'll jot down a note on my own card
if someone I'm meeting doen't have one.

Good idea. I'll remember that once I get business cards from my new
employer.
Or, I'll jot down a note on my own card if someone I'm meeting doen't have
one.
A lot of the "meetings" were being introduced to sometimes a half dozen
people at a time, sometimes in hallways. Just a round of hand shaking.
When we were in a classroom setting I tried to write them down as fast as I
could, but now I have a bunch of names with no faces to put them to.
Associating names and faces is another one of my brain defects. It usually
takes me many repetitions before the name and face finally sinks in. And
then I have to use it frequently or it's gone forever.

Or you can do what Ellen Degeneres does. "I'm sorry, how do you
pronounce your name again?"
Kathy
"Oh, KAthy...not kaTHY, I got it now."

Interesting. Now if I could just convince the rest of the world to wear
name tags!
