I just knew that was gonna be it. So cute!
My sister used to say "ow-wells hoot, hoooot hoot" over and over in a chant
to herself when she was little. We still tease her about it. I'll send
this to her. Good times, good times.

My favourite Saturday Night Live skit was The Delicious Dish on National
Public Radio. Good times. Good times.
Margeret Jo McCullen: Ana Gasteyer
Teri Rialto: Molly Shannon
[ open on Margaret Jo McCUllen and Teri Rialto on location ]
Margaret Jo McCullen: I'm Margaret Jo McCullen.
Teri Rialto: And I'm Teri Rialto.
Margaret Jo McCullen: And you're listening to...
Together: The Delicious Dish, on National Public Radio.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Well, Teri, Autumn is here, and, as you know, that
can mean only one thing for us: leaf -
Teri Rialto: Thoughts of a Christmas suicide.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Actually, Teri, I think you meant leaf-watching.
Teri Rialto: Oh, I'm sorry. That's what I meant. [ slight giggle ] I love
Fall. And that's why we're broadcasting today from the Cataranga State
Park in the Shenandoah Valley.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Teri and I thought we'd share some of the splendor
of Fall's color explosion with you today.
[ an animal can be heard howling off screen ]
Margaret Jo McCullen: Oooh, what was that? It's beautiful.
Teri Rialto: Ah. It's neat. It's like a crazy kaleidoscope out here.
Margaret Jo McCullen: I know. I feel like I'm on acid!
Teri Rialto: I feel like I'm tripping my ***** off.
Margaret Jo McCullen: Wow. It's neat.
Teri Rialto: Really neat.
Margaret Jo McCullen: It's fun. It's a lot like taking acid.
Teri Rialto: It's trippy.
Margaret Jo McCullen: It's good times.
Teri Rialto: Good times.

"But the books are right, an owl cannot move its eyes."

They can certainly move their heads around a lot, though. Almost 360
degrees, from what I've seen. Once they've locked onto something, you
can turn the body almost right round and they'll stay locked on. A bit
like modern tank systems. I wonder if that's where the arms people got
their idea. They also bob their heads from side to side which expands
the stereoscopy of their vision.
But what impresses me most is their ears. Did you know that they are
different sizes left from right, and at different heights in the skull
(in the barn owl, at least) which increases their stereo sound
discrimination? Barn owls can hunt successfully in pitch darkness.
Barn owls are a different group from most owls, so I'm not making the
ear claim about others, but I have seen locking on in mainstream owls.
It seems to be a rule that predators (like us) have good stereo vision,
at the expense of all-round sight. Owls take that to extremes. Prey
species have all-round vision, and only stereo in a very small area
directly in front of them, if at all. (Ever watched a thrush tilt its
head to one side to get a better look at a worm?)
They evolved that way because the ones with better vision behind and
above them were less likely to get eaten and more likely to breed so
their genes were preferentially passed on. Just like selecting dogs for
particular traits, and breeding for them, only this time it's natural
selection for the likeliest to survive and so breed.

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

haha, can't roll its eyes because the eyes aren't spherical, but owls have
long, highly-jointed necks, they move their eyes by moving their whole
head. The neck is covered with feathers in a way that hides it and the
owl's normal posture compresses it. Some owls can almost put their head
upside down and backwards. They roll their head instead of their eyes.
That head-bobbing-and-rolling behaviour you may have seen an owl doing is
the owl moving its eyes to get more visual detail, to see better, to have
more separation between three-dimensional objects like mice moving on a
littered forest floor. That's how it can be triggered, by making an owl
curious about or just notice something that might be like a prey.
