If you don't get a college degree you are doomed to being a slave to a
corporation or manual labor?

Or you start your own business. No background check on you or even a
drug test.

I have no idea. One stupid piece of paper decides your fate. I hate
America sometimes.

Sometimes even with that degree you're a slave to a corporation :)
I think it depends on how you look at it. I prefer to always think of
myself as self-employed, just currently on a "contract" with someone
else who pays me. I make sure I can handle getting fired if for some
reason I clash with someone - i.e. savings, backup plan, always
updating my
resume. I need money of course, like anyone else, but
it helps me to think I don't HAVE to put up with certain things.

I wish I didn't need anything... Or was retired, really properly
retired!
I do like working, mostly. I just hate the idea that my
income is dependent on an employer that might dump me so
I'm always ready for it. Having two parents who waited fearfully
during years of people getting laid off around them, to finally be let
go in the 90's (mandatory "early retirement") scared me. I couldn't
live like that.
I do try to keep my needs/wants to a minimum though! Try to
be frugal if not downright cheap sometimes.
