how did you discover ASD? |
one day while I was feeling very down & sad, I was scrolling through
the stories that came back when I had searched for something, maybe
the word depression. I read some things that I thought nobody else
wrote about or went through. It was incredible. And my only exposure
to ASD was through Deja, not any newsreader. Deja was my link to ASD!

It was 9 years ago when I was starting to plummet.....I searched under
"Depression" and found the newsgroup. I've been on ever since. Sometimes
more "on" than "off"..just depended. I lurk alot and try to assist when I
can.
I have met some wonderful people-lifelong friendships(even though we MAY
never meet) have been formed. I've met one of my friends years ago.
I "see" emotion when I read the e-mails.....I see through all the hurt and
pain...I see a person wanting to break out and connect. I see the happiness
that is possible within. I feel thier hope that has been squelched.
I still notice some of the "oldies" here once in awhile....really enjoy
knowing they are doing well..or sometimes...just "doing!".
Depression is a process, you can start your day over anytime you want, and
many times you "take every ten minutes at a time!"
I know I have a terminal case of "perkiness" except when at my VERY lowest,
which isn't very often anymore. I've had a LOT of health issues and many
people here have supported me and encouraged me through all of them!
I'm very grateful to have found ASD.

Right after we got internet access in 1995 I discovered Usenet,
and I participated regularly in alt.sexual.abuse.recovery. (Sorry
to disappoint you, Jamal, but it was for survivors of abuse, not
for their abusers.)
Some of the posters would cross-post to asd, and I found some
very supportive posts coming out of asd. So I subscribed to asd
too.
Funny thing is, it clicked. I found that dealing with depression
on a daily basis was a bigger part of my life than transcending
the abuse that had happened many years ago.
There is a connection between the two issues, my depression might
have been a reason I was the molester's choice of victim, and the
abuse triggered horrible depressive episodes. I do not minimize
the abuse; it came damn near destroying my life.
But today it's the depression that has the biggest impact on my
day to day activities, and there are things I can do to deal with
the depression. So today I put all my energy into living with
depression, and asd is a big part of that.
I'm glad I found this group. There are some wonderful people
here.

It's been so long that I don't even remember! I must have done a search for
"depression" or something and found it that way. And that was back in 1995!
I was "cb" back then. Wow!!!! I can't believe it's been so long!!!!

I stumbled across it from other peoples' crossposts in ASL.
And voila! Here I was at a new dwelling of small minded, cruel, judgemental

You're still mocking me, though.
I suppose in one sense I am. But in another sense, I'm not. In other
words, my intent is not to belittle you. If that was your reaction, my
apologies. My intent was to get you to not take yourself so seriously.
The thing is, people who like each other do this all the time. It's
similiar to how animals play. When I play with my dogs, we mock fight.
I fake hit them, they fake bite me. We each know the other side is
not serious, and that is the fun in the game. It's a way of testing the
waters with the other person, to put them seemingly at risk. When they
see they really aren't at risk, they feel relieved and thus know they
are safe with the other person. My dog knows I won't hit him, and I
know my dog won't bite me.

Ah-HA! Confirmation!
(Actually, the fact that you feel the need to mock my assessment of
this group IS proof that I'm right. You wouldn't be on the defensive
if I wasn't.)
Right. ;-)
And here I thought we were getting along.
We are getting along. That's why I put the little ;-) at the end.
You're still mocking me, though.
I suppose in one sense I am. But in another sense, I'm not.
I'm a one sense kind of guy. It's all because of an accident involving
fireworks when I was a kid. Real pain. Or ... not ... since I don't have
that sense.
In other
words, my intent is not to belittle you. If that was your reaction, my
apologies.
Not THIS again!
My intent was to get you to not take yourself so seriously.
[EyerolL]
Rule 1: If anyone EVER sees you take something seriously, you're taking
everything too seriously and need to lighten up.
Rule 2: If anyone EVER sees you not take something seriously, you never
take anything seriously and need to grow up.
The thing is, people who like each other do this all the time.
Oh, I'm familiar with that behavior. It gets very tiring after a while.
Actually, it's indistinguishable form bullying, except they assure you
they're your friend intermittently.
It's
similiar to how animals play.
And I know to know better.

Me too. It's a tricky line, you're right. I think it's a core part of
human nature, though. I mean, look at any organized group, esp. a group
of males. They all have their "rite of passage" - hazing, etc...
And your right, bullies use this to their advantage.
But I razz wombn constantly. Sometimes I royally ***** her off and have
to back off like a wimpering dog, and sometimes I make her laugh. So,
if I'm employing the same tactic with you, and you consider it bullying,
am I also bullying wombn too? If so, why then does she stayed married
to me?

All of human nature exists below the waist, unfortunately.

Dreadful, isn't it?
And your right, bullies use this to their advantage.
At least in grade school, bullies were plainly bullies. Then they get
into this crap about pretending to be your friend, and it's a total
mindfuck.
Not Tracy, thought. He's just a bully, pure and simple.
But I razz wombn constantly. Sometimes I royally ***** her off and

.... wow. *****. And you people always try to convince me that -I- know
nothing about people!
Maybe you lead a charmed life, and so you never had to be taught how to
be sensitive to other people. Let me explain something to you:
What works with one person won't necessarily work with another.
What you INTEND an action/statement/etc. to convey and what the
recipient actually interprets from that action/statement/etc. are two
completely different things. They do not have to match. You're viewing
things from completely different perspectives.
If so, why then does she
stayed married to me?
Well she's obviously nuts anyway. :)

And I've only your word (well, and wombn if she corroborates) to take
for that.

My brother was like that with me all our growing up years. I
definitely think there was hostility on his end. He doesn't do it now
though. Or if he does, it's much more gentle and doesn't have that
hostile feeling to it anymore.

cuz sometimes I can get a really good stinger back at *you*.

I was exploring a website on depression topics, which had a series of
links to depression newsgroups via google groups.

one day while I was feeling very down & sad, I was scrolling through
the stories that came back when I had searched for something, maybe
the word depression. I read some things that I thought nobody else
wrote about or went through. It was incredible. And my only exposure
to ASD was through Deja, not any newsreader. Deja was my link to ASD!
I did a search on 'depression' in my ISP's newsgroup list. That was back
when there were only twenty thousand groups.

Depression? No wonder this is such a miserable place.

I'm only here because I haven't yet realised this isn't a meteorology
group.
