how do you figure they're ignoring you?
Maybe they're just preoccupied with stuff that's going on in their head. I
do that a lot, and I can not notice half the world go by, look straight at
someone ant not register they're there at all.

I understand this totally. Saw several useful replies already,
here's my $0.02 US.
Sometimes its a matter of institutional climate. One place
I worked no one acknowledged my existence until the mgmt sorted
out what was going on. This sort of thing typically means it
is not a very good place to work.
I've had some experiences along this line that are really
hard to pin down. Some groups of people just have affinities
for some people and not for others; it's a group trait because
I'm entirely "visible" and not ignored by some of the same
people in other locales.
Sometimes people just aren't compatible. I know one returning
student who mentioned that some few other students could not
seem to acknowledge my friend's existence.
Even when it's one of these things way beyond one's own
control, and not a matter of one's own characteristics, it
still can hurt.

i just walk away from them and go do whatever i needed to do. that seems to
get their attention and they ask, "why didn't you tell me?" and i say, "i
did and you ignored me." then they know they cant play that game.

Depends on who's doing the ignoring. I'm actually quite thankful to be
ignored by some folks, and if I remain fortunate they'll continue to ignore
me.
