how do you cope with anxiety? |
My therp suggested I post (she doesn't understand newsgroups, but she knows
I talk to people online) and try to get some ideas for how to cope with the
severe anxiety I've been experiencing this past week or so.
My mood has been depressed for this past week, and the anxiety has been
steadily getting worse. I haven't been able to concentrate at work and have
been unproductive. I just keep staring off into space, trying to
rationalise making an excuse for going home sick.
Today was the worst. I really needed to get out of there, and I was
thankfully asked to take an early lunch break. I just went outside, sat in
my car and cried. Then I called my therp in a panic (luckily she was free
for a few minutes) and was in such an anxious state that I couldn't really
take in anything she told me anyway.
Other than taking breaks when I'm not supposed to, how can I keep the
anxiety at bay during work hours? I can't afford to lose this job, that
will only make things worse. I can't take a few days leave at the moment
because we're short staffed. And my pdoc believes I don't need a med change
or increase at the moment and that I need to focus on working with my therp
in order to get through this. When I'm this bad breathing exercises which I
could do discretely usually make me worse because I hyperventilate. I'm not
good at them. I intend to practice at home, so maybe I can use them
properly at work after a while.
I will continue therapy, but that's going to take a long time to work. How
do I keep myself from falling apart in the meantime?
Any suggestions, or constructive criticism greatly appreciated.

when my anxiety gets to be too much, i can't hardly do any of the things
i've tried to learn (breathing etc)
a short-term low-dose of one of the benzo's has been helpful to me, .5mg
xanax to be exact
helps me pull myself together again
hope you get some relief soon

Thanks justa. I tried my breathing exercises today and I had a bit of luck
with them, mostly because I was less anxious so I didn't have to fight
through panic to concentrate. It's still almost impossible to do them at
work though, because I have to think about my breathing so much I can't
concentrate to work at the same time, and I look like I'm slacking off if
I'm just sitting there doing nothing but breathing.
Some days, like yesterday, I would beg for the drugs. I know my pdoc won't
prescribe them atm though. He thinks I need to handle this with
psychological approaches. Plus I had a hard time coming off the last lot of
benzo's he gave me, so I doubt I'll be getting them again any time soon.

hi kylie
yes benzos should only be used short term because they really are
addictive........
well the pysch approaches are great but when I'm freaking out, everything,
and i mean everything, goes out the window..........
a small dose of benzo brings me back so i can try to come up with some kinda
coping strategy.........otherwise i get lost in a white-out of panic
hope things improve soon for you

Hey you,
You could start by giving yourself a little more credit for going in
there everyday and facing it!!
I struggle with this too. Be honest with coworkers. Tell them you
feel anxious. Let them in on whats going on with you. You will be
suprised how people respond to the truth. People will be supportive !
not everybody of course but most people. Thats all I can think of
that might help. I tried to keep a stiff upper lip for a long time
and I made everybody really uncomfortable . They knew something was
going on , they thought it was about them. Nobody wanted to be
around me which makes it hard to get things done. So now I just
explain that I am a little nuts , that it is not about them . that I
am just very uptight alot of the time. It made things a little better
for me. Good luck Kylie , I admire the way you keep going!! jill

Hi Jill, and thanks :)
I haven't really spoken about my depression and anxiety at work. My
co-workers know I've been having neurological problems, so any time I attend
an appointment or am a bit off colour they assume it's because of that and I
don't correct them.
You're probably right. I would probably feel better if I told a few people,
but I haven't been working there that long and it will take me a while to
work up the guts to do that I think. I know I come across as standoffish
and rude sometimes, people told me in a previous job. I'll try to get the
nerve up to tell a couple of people what's going on, but in the mean time I
just try to keep a smile on my face, even when it's totally fake.
Some days I'd love to give up and just quit, but if I quit at work then I'm
one step closer to giving up alltogether, and that's not an option. I've
been down that path before, and I didn't much enjoy it.

Zanic Paxil and Yoga Breathing I have been asked many times when is the
baby due? I just put my finger up (and no not that one thou I have
thought about put that one up several times/ hum?) anyway there are
relaxation exercises you can do as well. But I have found that when you
are in public and you are in full blow panic and you are sweeting about
to go blind, a relaxation exercise is the last fucking thing on your
mind. So back to the breathing try to slow down your breathing that is
the best thing that can help you / oh and your drugs! Sincerely Manic

Hi Tink
I got some tips on breathing techniques yesterday and hopefully that will
help with practice. Right now I just feel tight in the chest every time I
try for more than a few minutes and end up feeling like I'm suffocating.
Luckily nobody noticed I was doing the exercises today, I don't know how I
would have explained it!
I hope you're doing ok.
