Object: I am such a mechanical dunce!!
I need to check the oil in my car fairly often as for reasons I don't
understand it burns a bit of oil, but other than that runs well. It's
out of warranty now, so I'll probably sell it in the next 2 years.
I put oil in it a few days ago, and ever since then I keep smelling oil
fumes while driving. I thought maybe I'd overfilled it and asked my Dad
to look at it this afternoon.
Well, silly me forgot to put the cap back on when I put oil in and just
left the cap sitting on top of the engine. I've been driving around for
almost a week with no cap on, and oil spurting out of the hole and all
over the engine (though thankfully not too much, I still have 3/4 of a
tank of oil). Little wonder I could smell burning oil!
God knows where the oil cap is now! It probably fell off the engine
while I was driving to work one day, and is sitting in the middle of the
road somewhere! I'll hopefully be able to pick a new cap up at a auto
parts shop tomorrow, otherwise I'll have to go into a Hyundai dealership
and have them look at me like I'm a total idiot.
I did the same thing with the cap off the fuel tank of my parents car
once, not long after I got my license. Thankfully I went back to the
service station and someone had handed the cap in!
Maybe I should check Borders and see if they sell "Car maintenance for
dummies" :)

Yeah, can't imagine that too good over the exhaust manifold.

Prolly get one at auto one or RepCo for a lot cheaper.

I simply just go over everything I've done and double check it all.
I will admit on one occasion I did leave the oil drain plug out while
filling with somewhat expensive oil. Realized after pouring in around
1/2 a liter, kicked myself, then thought - meybe good for it.

Hyundai Accent, 2001 model but first registered in 2002, 3 door auto
with almost 85,000 km's on the clock. Worth maybe $10,000 if I wanted to
sell it.
I'll admit, I was just checking prices online for Mazda 3, Holden Astra
and Honda Civic's, which are all very nice, but because I'm still scared
my health will go downhill and I won't be able to work (again), I don't
want to get a loan and get a new one just yet.

It didn't look pretty, with oil splattered all over the inside of the
bonnet, but since there was still lots of oil in it I don't think I did
any damage.

I'll make a trip to SuperCheap Auto tomorrow and hope they have one that
fits.

well, I wouldn't even know where to find the oil drain plug to change my
own oil, so you're doing much better than me!

Shouldn't be burning oil at only that.

Never buy a new car, as folk who do just flushed a large percentage
of it's value by driving it out of the showroom.
Trick is to find one that the original buyers decided they
didn't like it. Beware they might not have liked it because
it was a lemon. Choose the right low km vehicle. I did.

Nah, turbo chargers hooked up to rocker cover breather
take in oil too.

SuperCrap might not. Try Auto One or RepCo.

own oil, so you're doing much better than me!

These days for me, it's go through the motions, and then
go though the check list. Didn't used to be like that, now is.
You are doing well topping up/checking the oil, a lot of folk
don't.
