Object: I caught a bat
I caught him in a cup (after he stopped flying in the room and hung on
the window trim) but I can't remember what cup I used so I have to
throw them all away. (I released him outside, he flew away. No bats
were hurt in the making of this post.)
Brianguitar, and I don't know why Google cuts off my name like this;

I remember reading about ppl who grew up in an old old house
in Scotland. Lots of bats. They caught them with hankerchiefs,
like a net. Didn't hurt the bats.
Hoping those were all styrofoam cups.

Google has smegged all Google Groups archives and that's
part of the damage.

Why do you have to throw away the cups?

There is no virtue in compulsory government charity, and there is no virtue
in advocating it. A politician who portrays himself as "caring" and
"sensitive" because he wants to expand the government's charitable programs
is merely saying that he's willing to try to do good with other people's
money. Well, who isn't? And a voter who takes pride in supporting such
programs is telling us that he'll do good with his own money -- if a gun is
held to his head.

I didn't realize bats were so small that you could catch one in a cup.
Do they come in different sizes?
I dropped my toothbrush in the toliet, I definitly have to buy a new
one of those. jill

Sure. Some are really tiny (microchiroptera) with wing spans of as little
as six inches (as opposed to a flying fox with a wing span of six feet.)

I dropped my toothbrush in the toliet, I definitly have to buy a new

You could just boil it. I know it's an ingrained mental perception of
filthiness, but your toilet very likely has less germs than your kitchen
counter. Actually, if you don't boil your toothbrush regularly, chances
are your toothbrush was far dirtier *before* being dropped in the toilet.
You contaminated your toilet!
Hehe, hope this helps... ;)

Why do you have to throw away the cups?

Because bats carry rabies.
If you come into contact with a bat you have to get vaccinated for rabies
within 24 hours.
That's contact folks... you don't need to be bitten or scratched by a bat
to get rabies from it.
There is no cure for rabies and I can't think of a more horrible way to
die.

Might carry rabies, but probably not.
when I was a kid m y father brought home a baby bat. I kept it for a
few days, I didn't know enough about feeding them, and it starved. I
fed it cows milk, they need a lot more fat in their diet.
I had heard that they got tangled in a persons hair, so I tried it.
That part didn't hold water either. I was sad when it died.
In the Philippines I saw lave bats trussed up and sold for food. I'm
certain that the people who caught them, sold them, and ate them
didn't routinely die from rabies.
Were it me, I'd rinse the cup, maybe even wash it with soap, then go
on about my life.
And leave the bats alone, they are too cool to bother.

If you want to gamble on probably not, considering the consequences, go
for it (40 cases of domesticated animals in the US every year on average).

You should take a moment to look into the effects of rabies... and keep in
mind there is no cure... once you have it, you die (with the exception of
one young girl, recently, who was given a new, experimental treatment and
managed to live. There is no word on how fucked up, retarded, and
physically screwed up she's going to be for the rest of her life.)

I eat at McDonald's, I drive, I go out in the sun. Lightening is a
much higher risk than rabies. It is bad, I know, but rare.
From the CDC:
"A: Non-bite exposures to rabies are very rare. Scratches, abrasions,
"open wounds, or mucous membranes contaminated with saliva or other
"potentially infectious material (such as brain tissue) from a rabid
"animal constitute non-bite exposures. Occasionally reports of
"non-bite exposure are such that postexposure prophylaxis is given."

I don't remember enough of the details, but there was an ebola

didn't affent hemans, but it took out all the monkeys they had there..
You don't need to handle the monkeys if the person across the street
does. I don't see how mankind will avoid a massive epidemic of one of

it.

Agreed... and I get your point... but handling a possibly rabid animal
without taking existing precautions that could prevent a horrible death is
sort of like having sex with heroin addicts without a condom... catching
AIDS is rare... but you do kinda' want to limit your exposure if possible.

Rabies isn't endemic here in the UK, but we get a few cases from
travellers abroad, and rabid bats are occasionally found - their the
only mammal that migrates across the Channel.
Bat roosts are protected, but I don't know if all bats are. I think some
species are, but most people (like me) have no idea which species is
which.

There are effective ways to 'munge' an e-mail address so that it is too
difficult for spammers to 'harvest' automatically, but the Google method
isn't one of them. They still leave the 'domain name' part in clear text,
and that's what the spammers are interested in - they can then use a
'dictionary attack' to send their spam to all the possible 'user names'
their bots have listed, knowing that a sufficient number will get through
(including to you, of course).
In any case, as Google explain lower down that explanation page, the
un-mucked-about e-mail addresses are still visible in the articles when
read using the normal news-servers - which are far more 'efficient' places
for spammers to harvest addresses from, than any web site.

Title: Re: I caught a bat 17 Aug 2005 12:01:18 PM
I probably should use outlook and the newsreader that comes with my
isp. But I just changed to DSL sbc/yahoo today. So everything is
confused. Yeah, they were only plastic cups, so no big deal, but yup,
the thought of rabies, which bats carry is horrendous. He poked his
little head out between the cup and a magazine I had him trapped in.
He though I was going to snuff him, but I never kill creatures. I even
walk 2 flights down to deliver moths and flys outside from my room, in
the cups. Bad Karma to kill. I used to be a hunter. It was never
pretty. I just loved carrying guns in the woods. Now I quit fishing
because I don't want to stick hooks in a fishes mouth. My father went
through the same thing. He killed people in the war, but years later
when I was cheering as the gulf war footage showed tanks being cluster
bombed, he said, "Damn it, there are people in those tanks." So that's
my bat story. (Yeah, they are small, like big mice. Think in German
its Fliedermaus(sp) or flying mouse.)
