I think I've trained my family not to say that. I'm not sure I've got

yup. i was 8 when i came up with the notion that the universe might be a
vast steam radiator like the one in my bedroom. the idea of it being a
living organism came later, when i was a teen. i remember, because i wrote
poems about it. i see it as more of a poetic hypothesis than a scientific
one. but that could just be compartmentalized thinking on my part, or not
sufficiently disciplined thinking.
Imagine how big it must be if its big bangs are heartbeats. Everything
would be so slow that we could never figure it out.
but there may be other intelligent beings whose life span is so immensely
long that they've been able to do it. and the universal being itself, is it
intelligent? are there others? maybe the universe is just one person waiting
for a train in a crowded station.

I came crashing down this Xmass too....I sat up and blogged most of the
night. the only good thing that came from my crash is that I got to
meet all of you wonderful folk. My family called the whole day to ask
me to come down and have "fun" with them. I was bawling my eyes out
and ended up looking like Rudolf the reindeer with a red nose. Needless
to say, I didnt go and still didnt go. this time of year can suck.

I don't know how they've resolved the religious issues regarding the children,
but I do know that every year at Hannakuh, there is one night when they
celebrate their own family tradition of "Poutinakuh". This is the night when
they make a huge mess of poutine (a French Canadian speciality which mixes
cheese curds, french fries, and gravy) for their dinner.

i come from a jewish family which kept christmas, for reasons originating
with my mother being orphaned at the age of three. it had a huge sentimental
and neurotic importance to her, not least because it provided her with a
fantastic tool for tormenting and manipulating the living bejeezus out of
her kids. it's probably the main reason for my neurotic fear and loathing of
"the season", although there are one or two others.

But I've seen Xmas as a purely commercial phenomenon for decades, and
even if I bought myself a prezzy (CDs) it was something I'd have bought
over the next few months anyway.
No pressure in this household to behave in any particular way, even
Chanukah is a very low key event; I missed it every night, and my wife
forgot the candles as often as not.
Oh, well. It happened.
