I have a hard time asking for money |
My dad always tells me that if I need more money,I shouldn't be
afriad to ask him for more...but I have a tough time with that...I feel
that he gives me plenty of money.He gives me spending money,I don't
have to pay for rent or bills...I have necessities and enough
luxuries..I'm 31...It just seems embaressing to me to ask him for more
money...I'd like to earn more of my own money...The thing is though I
enjoy luxuries,and fun things,and fancy resturaunts,I can also
appreciate simple things...I like "not fancy" resturaunts just fine...I
don't know if I will ever live a totally austere,ascetic lifestyle,but
a part of me would really like to live pretty simply...

but still, you'd like to do stuff like buy a relative a book
that can't be found discount, etc. right? I know about this.
I'm in somewhat similar situation. I know what it's like.

my parents keep asking if we need to borrow money. there's
nothing i've said that should give this impression, but i
guess we're just the 'poor kids'. i've had to borrow from them
before, to buy a car we desperately needed 10 years ago, but i
wasn't comfortable with it and will never be. i even hate when
my mother pays for eveything when we're together.
i wish i could be earning money of my own, not just living on
disability insurance, but that's not the way the cards were
dealt this time around.

I hear what you're saying Lisa...I just can't ask my dad for
money...I'll happily accept what he gives me,but asking is something I
just can't do...

Judith's parents are always doing that. It doesn't do much for my
self esteem I'll tell you. Since we started this business as a
full time venture for us both they have started making comments
about hoping we have food on the table etc. They're not mean just
insensitive.
Sometimes I feel like writing a letter and asking if they need a
loan just for spite. Of course that is childish and immature but
sometimes I want to be childish and immature dammit! <stamps foot
and sulks>

Don't look a gift dad in the mouth...?
Some dads are just like that. My dad still asks at times if I need money,
and I make more than he does. Perhaps that basic provider instinct never
goes away with some of them. Dad had issues early on in my life and he
really wasn't much of a dad in most ways. But he was always a good
provider. Now that he no longer needs to provide, maybe he's wondering
what's left.
Or, and I feel bad even saying this but it's another possibility, does your
dad see you as being hopelessly ineffectual? Is his financial support the
modern equivalent of keeping you in the cellar?

I don't know how he look at it exactly...what's embarressing to me
is that I work about 10 hours of paid work a week...that's about $70
per week...obviously not enough to support myself on...So,I'm sure that
he enjoys helping me out,I'd be in BIG trouble without him...but of
course,he'd be more then happy if I could earn more of my own money.I'm
sure everyone would,including myself...I've applied to many
jobs...bookstores,walgreens ect...I haven't had any luck...

I used to have very long hair for a period of a couple of years...he
didn't like that at all.he likes my short hair much better...I finally
cut my hair because I got tired of everyone calling me "miss"...

Take the money and buy your dad a nice gift to show how much you
appreciate him. :)
(No, I'm not jealous. I may be broke, but I love buying My Own Stuff
with My Own Money. Have since age 16.)

On his birthday,I always write him a nice note in the birthday card
telling him how much he is loved and appreciated...We've gotten much
close over the years...
