You need a course for an AED? Nowadays, you just stick the pads on and
let 'r rip. When I was an EMT in the hosptial, it was my job to test the
manual defibrillator daily and whenever they were bringing a critical
patient in. It even had the paddles. Now, they all have stick-on pads.
It's safer that way.

You need a course for an AED?
yes. our church recently purchased one, and there are supposed to be at
least 5 people certified to use it. since i also teach preschool up at my
church, i have to take the CPR class every 2 years anyway. this time they
certified us in using the AED as well since we now have one in the building.

yes, but there are a few things to know. like making sure NO one is
touching the person while it's analyzing the victim and/or delivering the
shock. it's amazing how many morons probably wouldn't realize that. also,
you have to shave the victim a little bit first if they are male and have a
hairy chest. and if they are female, you have to cut off and remove the bra
so that the underwire doesn't interfere. and another person is supposed to
continue CPR compressions the entire time you are setting up the AED. it's
also nice to have folks who know ahead of time exactly where to place the
pads. otherwise, someone new to the AED would have to sit down with a
manual and figure it all out while the poor victim is laying there having a
heart attack.
oh, and another thing that might be important to know in an emergency.
don't put the pads directly on the nipple because they've been known to rip
them completely off upon removal of the pad!! OUCH!!!!!!
When I was an EMT in the hosptial, it was my job to test the
manual defibrillator daily and whenever they were bringing a critical
patient in. It even had the paddles. Now, they all have stick-on pads.

yeah, they are very cool. stats now say that having an AED on site
increases heart attack victims chances of survival to a rate of 70 to 90%!!
that's good odds!

You know what a defibrillator does though, right? You actually kill the
person by stopping their heart to save their life. I've always wanted to
use one, but I've never had the chance. I just got to test a manual
defibrillator and use an AED and semi-AED on a dummy.

true. but you are also jump starting them back into a regular rhythm. the
only time a defibrillator is necessary is when that rhythm is off. and if
it's off, chances are good that they aren't going to live anyway. :/

that's what we did today. took turns using it on a CPR dummy. we each got
tested on it individually. it was kind of fun, but a little nerve wracking
at the same time. several of us were shaking as we did it, even though it's
just a dummy. imagine how we'd be shaking if it was the real thing!

We had a special one. It was like a CPR dummy, but it scored you on
using it. Like where you put the paddles and such.

kewl! the lady told us about those, but we didn't have that kind. she had
to score us on each thing herself. i was thinking today that having her job
would be really kewl. just going around to different places teaching
CPR/AED and first aid to folks in a 3 hour course. i really think i'd like
that. something to think about...

Had your instructor ever used one in real life? My instructor was the

she's used one a few times, but nothing real dramatic. once was a high
school football player at a football game.
what i want to know is, where do you get the razor to shave the chest hair
off a male victim? i mean, who just happens to keep those in their purse or
first aid kits, ya know? i guess we'll have to get one and keep it in
there.

I guess so. I never heard that you had to shave them first, just to be
sure and use the conductive jelly.

Urk, a male should not have chest hair. I don't have that (thankfully)
however epilate all other body hair.
Yuk, Yuk, and double yuk.
That was way too much info.

some women think chest hair is sexy as heck. ;-) so long as it isn't
growing over their shoulders and down their backs, of course. :D
