I have to get glasses :( |
I can think of much better ways to spend $400.....
I've had reading glasses for 8 years, the same pair all that time, and I
rarely bother to wear them because they're too strong
Apparently the reason they're too strong is because my eyes have changed
and now not only do I need new reading glasses but also glasses for
distance stuff too, so the optometrist prescribed (for lack of a better
word) those ones that go from distance at the top to reading strength at
the bottom. Argh, that's like having bifocals!! I'm only 27, that makes
me feel really old!
Luckily I only really need to wear them for work because I'm doing so
much close up stuff there, but the optometrist suggested they might also
help with my night driving. The other cars headlights and the
streetlights twinkle and sparkle really brightly and it can be hard to
see, but that's been happening for years. It's why I try not to drive
at night when I'm even a little tired.
Apparently there's tricks to having those sort of graduated lenses so
you don't look down and fall over your own feet because things look
bigger. Anyone got any tips for me?

My wife put hers on and doesn't seem to have had any trouble from day
one. It's like meds, just because there's a side-effect listed, it
doesn't mean you'll get it.

i paid $1.08 at the dollar store-
i use to be able to buy the el cheapo reading glasses at the drug
store as well when i was in my young 30's, but my poor eyesight is too
complex for them anymore. i have a lazy eye to begin with. that has
always been a problem. i had surgery when i was 2 and wore eye
patches and all that. i wore glasses until high school, but the eye
doctor said at that point there was no need to wear them anymore
because they weren't doing any good. at that time, my good eye was
seeing 20/20. when i hit my mid 30's, my good eye began to decline
quickly. and my lazy eye also began to get worse as well. now i have
to go in every 2 years and get a new prescription. as you can
imagine, the prescription in my "good" eye is far different than the
one in my "bad" (lazy) eye. so i can't just wear regular glasses that
have the same magnification in both lenses. if i did, my lazy eye
would completely turn inward at this point in my life. i have to have
completely different prescriptions in each lens.
i also like expensive frames. <g> since i have to wear them all day,
i wanna look as good in them as possible!

There are laser and contact lenses available.

I have had glasses since as a teen. I've worn them only for driving at
night. My
suspicion is I just don't see well in the dark, and I don't. The
headlamps on my
truck might need a little looked at in that regard being almost 18
years old.
That said, I prefer to sit up front of the class if watching a
whiteboard, or other
presentation, otherwise never used them.
I can see correctly *as long as there is light* down to fine detail.
If no, or dim light,
I can't see a thing.

Urk, not good.
Seriously look into the laser option.

Yep, chalk that one up for me too. I don't fail the license eyesight
test, but would if it was darker. I also don't like to drive at night.

I'm sorry you have to wear glasses. I've been wearing them since I was
nine years old: 48 years ago. Do you still feel old? :-) I hope
not.

If it's just reading strength glasses, no astigmatism, I'd consider
drug store glasses for work. they run about US $20 here, I have heard
of them being cheaper. I use regular bifocals, I am old. I tried the
graduated glasses one time, found them not at all acceptable for my
use, the reading portion was very narrow, left to right. I had to
move my head to read a whole page. Regular bifocals work well for me.
I didn't have trouble with the looking down part, I think it's an
individual response and it just didn't bother me. Until you try you
won't know how you respond. I need a separate pair for computer use,
the distance is wrong for that purpose.
Are there no discount glasses places available? that price sounds
high

laughed and told me i'm getting older. i'm only 29! argh!

You should get used to wearing them. It might take a week
before things stop looking weird, though. I wore traditional
bifocals as a kid for awhile. At the very first, it seemed
like things in the bottom of my vision were jumping up at me
when I walked, but I got used to it. Progressives would
probably have been easier, since it wouldn't have been a very
disconcerting large spot in my field of vision.
Good luck with them, Kylie. I hope they help your night
driving.
