I've flown a couple of times and had my cell phone in a bag or in my
pocket and forgot to turn it off and the plane didn't fall out of the sky.
From what I've read, every test everyone has run has shown cellphones don't
interfere. However, think of the price if they are wrong. Potentially
hundreds of lives lost due to one malfunctioning cell phone spitting out
radio interference, so I understand why they choose to err on the
conservative side on that topic.
I suppose the only real danger is a frivolous lawsuit - because a bed
that's got $100 bills stuffed in the pillow top is nice to have after
brain cancer.
For a pillow stuffed with $100 bills, I might volunteer for brain cancer,
the curable kind of course.

If that's what caused it the best I think they would be able to figure
out is that some piece of avionics failed. I can only think it would
have to be such a common failure to be able to track it down to the
passengers...and then further down to which item they're holding. I'll
bet most of today's laptop equipped passengers don't know how to fully
shut off their wifi hardware.

Good point. I'd bet money on that too.
That may be one reason why they insist that all electronics of any kind be
shut off during take offs and landings.

| Be careful. They say the number one reason for gas station fires is
static
| electricity discharges. Always touch the metal of the car (no where near
| the filler tube) before starting the pump.
|
| If you have to get back in the car, know that doing so can build up a
static
| charge on you again. They said the number one way to prevent gas station
| fires is to not get back in the car.
|
| If you do have get back inside, be sure to touch metal (far away from the
| filler tube) again before approaching the pump hose again.
|
| Bruce.
|

Actually, a survey here claimed women were more likely to be involved in a
fire because of the static in the nylons they are wearing.....
maybe they should legislate for naked re fuelling zones?

LOL!! Man, that would really be tough in this weather.
"According to news reports, investigators found that 78% (or roughly
three-quarters) of the static-caused fires involved women, who apparently
have a greater tendency to return to the vehicle while refueling."
"Around two-thirds of the documented cases involved the subject returning to
the driver's seat."

Oh my. Forgive me, but yes, that does sound a bit
nuts.
:-)
I wouldn't have left the house at all today if not for
a dentist appointment tonight. Our high today was -1.
I had to stop and pump gas but that wasn't too bad
because the wind had FINALLY died down. These
temperatures are sooo much more bearable when there
isn't a wind.
it was windy here with very strong gusts. it wasn't too
bad when we were in the woods, but the cleared areas
were painful. pumping gas isn't fun in these temps, even
without wind. that handle gets awfully cold.

i wear gloves
so do i, but the handle radiates cold. i need better
gloves.
do you guys not have gas pumps with locking clips? i lock
it in place and jump back in my van on cold days while the
gas pumps away. :)
no locking clips here. they file them off.

i'm not sure, but they came off when self-serve gas came into
being. they seem to have clips at the full-service stations.

you can't even find full service stations around here anymore.
i'm still wondering why they don't have the clips up there, though. maybe
they're worried about the fire hazard thing bruce was talking about. you
guys probably build up more static electricity since ya'll use so much more
heat than we do. :)))

my torso was hot in my parka and my feet were warm in wool

i been doin' a lot of walkin' lately. it's been down-right BITTER
here. -30 windchills the last few days! there hasn't been much
wind today, so it's a balmy something around zero, maybe a
tictch below ...
brisk!!!, i tell you what!
hope you enjoyed your walk. fresh air does a body good. the
air may be cold, but that means it's dense -- course, some of
that density is vehicle and heater and power plant exhaust,
locked in near the ground. thank god for particulate emissions.

the first mile of the walk was good. the second half was too
cold. it was nice to get into an overheated house to sit by
the woodstove.

really well. now that i've stabilized at a good level, we're

besides, not being real fond of the cold ...
it could always be better, couldn't it? but, it's not too bad.
some stuff falls thru, some stuff shows promise, i'm keeping
busy and getting what i need to done. some things have to
wait, some things won't break till we get warmer weather.
there's always another page to turn ... there are some family
issues that i don't think will ever get resolved, so i try not to get
too involved. sometimes people won't let you do that, tho.
all in all, i have friends, and contacts, and it's all good.
