I need a PC with dual core CPU |
so that the virus scan can run without everything else slowing down to a
crawl.

Or change to Linux so that you don't need a virus scan at all. Of course,
Linux is perfectly happy running on a dual-core CPU, so you can still get
your new toy if you still want it, but you'll need a different excuse.

Or change to Linux so that you don't need a virus scan at all. Of

The problem with Linux is that many applications I use aren't available for
it: Outlook, Quicken, Photoshop CS2, to name a few.
