Object: I ordered a camera
First I made the mistake of going to the cheapest place. Refused
to buy their overpriced add-ons, though they really pushed me
to. Item that they said was in stock was suddenly backordered.
When that backorder time was up, they said more backorder, even
longer, though their site still said "In stock". Turned them in
to their state attorney general.
Next, I was stupid and reordered from the next least expensive
place. It was really in stock. Came time to verify the order and
they happened to mention that I really should buy an extended
warranty, since the coverage for imports was poor. Didn't want a
grey market device, so cancelled that order, too.
Finally ordered from a reputable firm. Paid much more than I
wanted, probably wouldn't have ordered that model at that price,
but I'd already bought the filter adapter specific to it and
fallen in love with the camera. Joe's going to freak when he
sees the bill.
Lesson learned.

Cheap will buy you cheap?
I have a fifty year old camera, still in good working order. My main
cameras are thirty years old. I doubt if a digital is going to manage
ten. All but the best are disposable items these days.

I got a great digital Olympus camera five-seven years ago. Got
it as a gift, but it set Joe back quite a bit. It takes 1.3
megapixel photos. My new phone does better than that, and I
could care less about the camera in it. The new camera does 8
megapixels, which they're currently saying is about the
boundary in terms of picture quality before you want to get an
SLR, which I can't afford. Yet.
I don't know what ever happened to my 35 mm film camera. It's
at least 50 years old. I recently got my childhood Brownie
camera back, which would probably still work fine if I could
get film and flashbulbs for it.
The new camera would probably be a waste of money, except that
I want the best photos I can afford for my upcoming trip. It
cost significantly more than the camera, though the trip was a
gift.
My lesson is that if you buy from the cheapest place you can
find, expect big problems, not worth the discount. Stick to a
reputable dealer if you want a reputable product and buy less
than you'd most want if necessary. Cheap's generally not worth
it.

I think I'm going to play digital for at least awhile now,
thanks. My camera came today and it's a great new toy with lots
of knobs and buttons all over it, and a manual that says what
some of the cryptic codes and symbols mean.
Thnaks, though. Joe's got a good 35mm SLR, used to play
photographer once upon a time, but even he's gone straight
digital.

I've got a hp 435 camera which takes photos of very
acceptable quality. Take around 20 photos and it's out
of memory. Leave it powered on for more than five minutes
and the two AA batteries shite themselves. Carbon batteries
even if new won't work. Top quality alkaline batteries get you
five minutes. Two Ni-MH batteries wont see an hour, or anywhere
near it although rated at 2.5 AH, and the cam desires 2.5 Amps
from two AA batteries at all times while taking photos.
It's totally bizzarre how they even sold that, or why I bought it.
It takes good photos though. 3.34 MP. Downloading pix via
it's USB port seems a lot less harsh on the batteries.

If you are ever looking for more photographic equipment, I can
recommend a place that is relatively inexpensive but good: B&H Photo
Video (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/). We've bought stuff from them for
more than 25 years...back in the predigital age. I bought my last
camera (digital) from them, as well. Never had a hint of a problem.
There's a line between "cheap" and "too cheap."

My husband's department does lots of business with B&H. In
fact, that's where I finally ordered from. I ordered last
evening and the shipping info says I'll have it tomorrow.
They're more reasonable than cheap. Cheap's not worth it.
Thanks.

I found that site after trying the first 2 places. The first
place I'd gone with, people had had exactly my experience, and
someone had posted a link to the attorney general's reporting
site. I added my experience. The second site had a slightly
better rating, still awful, and I found out to look for grey
market cameras, of which this was one, so I cancelled.
B&H shipped about 12 hours after I placed the order and I
trust them to sell legit equipment.

I bought all three of my sons digital cameras for Christmas. I got
them Kodak Easy Share 5 mega pixel ones. They say they love them.
I got them from the Kodak Store, their refurbished department. They
all have a one year warranty, and the boys say they're like brand new.
They were less than $80 apiece, including shipping to each individual
address.
I wanted to get them digital cameras, but I didn't have $300 to spend.
I (and they) think I did good.
I want a digital SLR and I'm going to get one. It's a promise I've
made to myself. I love to take pictures. I'll probably go through
ebay as I've not once been disappointed in what I've bought there.
But I am very careful from whom I buy.
Have fun on your trip!

Thnaks, Denise, we will!
I got each of my boys a 6 megapixel camera for their trip to
New Zealand with their grandparents. Spent $80-$90 on sale
apiece and they worked well. Each boy came home with lots of
photos. Maybe too many, Michael wanted me to look through all
800 of his.
The camera I ordered is supposed to be the next best to an
SLR, which I just can't afford. It's got 12x optical
magnification, superzoom to supermacro. I figure if we're
examining flora and fauna, I'm going to want both ends of the
spectrum. Supposedly, it delivers. It's coming today, so I'll
see how it does soon.

Many years ago I set to buy a camera which was the top seller at that

noticed something funny in the viewfinder. The reflecting mirror was

The mirror fell out of its holder on an Olympus OM4 I was using last
summer. I glued it back, and it's been no trouble since. A broken mirror
is beyond glue, and shouldn't have been on sale (smashed in transit?),
but is easily replaced.

One problem with ordering over the net is that you can't see
what you're getting. Not that I'd have tried to run the serial
number of the camera before I bought it to make sure it was
legit and American. But had it had a problem like the one you
saw, I'd have been up a creek.

I know. At least I've pounded into my thick skull how the
system works. I knew it, just thought it didn't apply to
me.

Many years ago I set to buy a camera which was the top
seller at that time, the Cannon AE1. I looked for the
cheapest dealer (by adverts in the paper, as we used then)
and went to get it. I was shown the camera and noticed
something funny in the viewfinder. The reflecting mirror
was broken. I,then understood I had to buy in a more
reputable firm.

One problem with ordering over the net is that you can't see
what you're getting. Not that I'd have tried to run the serial
number of the camera before I bought it to make sure it was
legit and American. But had it had a problem like the one you
saw, I'd have been up a creek.

That's where the money goes, in after-sales service: Cheap firms don't
have any.

And if it's an import device not made for sale in the US, the
manufacturer won't cover it. Someone found that out the hard
way after ordering from the second firm I looked at, and
thankfully blogged it where I could find it.

I didn't know you at the time (we were NOT communicating), but was I know
you, I would have used it to get photos of all concerning you, only.
