Yes I hear many saying "bye and good

My guess is that the reasoning didn't include being fed up with net abuse.

If a lurker falls in the forest does it's complete lack of support,
participation or overall contribution make any difference whatsoever? I think I
can existentially assert - no. <yawn>

And so few of us talk to or answer the invisible judging presence. Oh well,
what can you expect? We can't all be remote viewers.

Would you like to be the zen master dispensing pearls of wisdom? Unfortunately
to do that you'd have to exert the energy to tap tap tap on that keyboard more
than once every two years. It'd be hard, I know.
Yes I hear many saying "bye and good

Oh, so what, people have left. Where do you think they go? Do they evaporate
once you don't see their nicknames anymore? Once they're not on this group does
that mean that because you can't see them they have ceased to exist? What's
that word again? Narcissistic?
Do you ever consider that they might be attending jazz festivals?

Hardly. Certainly not of either of those people, one tragic, one

avoided, the way she devotes most of it to blaming another ASD person

I find door-slammers easier to deal with than people who just disappear.
People who disappear when they're obviously very low are the worst,
though we often hear 'he was acting much better and then...', so maybe
we should watch out for the happy ones.

Yes, but that statement comes at the very end of a long story that is

Which goes to show that different people can read the same words and
take a different meanings from it. I was wondering if she realised what
she was getting herself into. With hindsight, the relationship built as
Chris got worse. It would make for a tense, dark film, and no one gets a
happy ending.

I don't really remember, I do know over the years I've lurked here on
and off there's been some pretty damn nasty stuff along with the
tragedies. And coincidences of course. Several of the folks I "knew"

For certain values of "natural" obviously.

I'm not sure I've ever read a
not-gonna-lurk-no-more announcement on

of it all.

Well, you're not reading this reply, so
it's kind of a rhetorical exercise for
me, but I'm curious -- how do you deal
with people whose behavior offends you
in other environments? Workplace,
neighborhood, extended family, et al?
To be honest, I get bugged by people
everywhere. If I don't find ways of
co-existing with people I feel offended
by, well, that kinda limits my options
in life. Usenet's been a good place for
me to learn more about how to do that.
Lest you think I haven't been around
long enough to "get it" as far as
Dave is concerned I have been.
I've been a silent lurker for over two years and
in all that time all I've seen is a person with an obvious
Narcissistic Personality Disorder, not
the zen master dispensing pearls of
wisdom that he would like you to think
he is.
I find your general idea that a
narcissist might care about anything
someone else thinks to be kinda zen. In
a "the sound of a lurker not reading"
kinda way. Oh, and another question --
why do you care if there are people who
have a different opinion about it than
you do? I'm not challenging your
reaction to the poster. But why does it
bug you that someone else -- me, for
example -- has a different reaction?
Yes I hear many saying "bye and good
riddance", "just a no-name lurker anyway",
but I'll bet I'm not the only person who's left because
they couldn't stomach his behavior and the fact that
so few really seem to see past his calculated and
sometimes witty one-liners.
No, I'm sure you're not the first person
who left here, or any other group on
Usenet, because they were offended by
someone's behavior. But where the heck
do you all go? Do you actually find
Usenet groups where everyone behaves well?
Well, nice chatting with you, Fedup, and

Well, nice chatting with you, Fedup, and best of luck. I'll miss yer lurkin'
presence.
Why do people lurk and never speak? I don't really understand that sort of
passive non-engagement. If you're going to invest the time and energy in
listening, why not talk too? If you think someone is abusive and bad, why would
you never speak up except immediately pre-flounce? It seems so life unlived to
me.

Heck, no. Not with a buncha people inna chat room and no one typing a
word. FexBot has more to say than the rest of them combined. Used to be
a worthwhile place to go. Not any more.

Oh I do that all the time. Hey, they say usenet is a write-only
medium, someone has to rebalance it <G>
Seriously, you wanna know why I mostly lurk? Cos I know from
experience what happens when I start to post. Just go look at where I
am now on the lusers list. I really really have to discipline myself
hard not to jump into everything when I'm on a roll, keep focused,
keep to small forums, sit on my fingers, or THIS happens.

The good thing about the net is, there's somewhere for most everyone,
in fact there are lotsa places for most everyone.
Shut UP"! OK sorry . . .

That's true. There are even places more sanctuaryish on the web if you feel
more comfortable outside of the wild jungle of usenet.

Yeah, most of the techy stuff I used to follow is much easier to get
to on web forums (fora) the noise to signal ratio on usenet can be
ridiculous. Probably it gets worse as the noisemakers get blocked out
of webforums and the singalmakers go there away from usenet.

Did you see that troll? One bleat, and an echo that seems to have scared
