Object: i saw my pdoc today
and he raised my antidepressant again. this is the last time. it
can't go any higher. the problem is that it keeps pooping out on
me and needing higher doses. and this is it. next time it poops
out, i do nothing or go off it.
does anyone have experience with going from parnate to nardil?
nom? that seems to be the final change, but my pdoc's not sure
if it's a good idea. he's going to talk to his expert at harvard
about it. if not, there's no other antidepressants to try.
he did say that if i'm not a good candidate for nardil, that he
was going to petition the insurance company for tms
(transcranial magnetic stimulation.) it's offically still
classified as experimental in the u.s., though it's now an
accepted treatment in canada. unfortunately, if insurance won't
cover it, i'd have to pay out of pocket, which i'm not about to
do. while it's highly unlikely that it will be allowed by
insurance, it's worth a try.
i'm glad i have a pdoc who tries...

i'm glad too, hun...
i wish you weren't having to increase the parnate again. i'm sure you feel
like it's hopeless at this point.

thanks. it's not hopeless yet, but i can see the end of the
road, and it's getting closer. i hate thinking that i might
never feel this good again, even when i'm feeling like
relative crap. well, there's always something new...
i hope things improve for you soon. i read about your ordeal,
and am just speechless. for someone to do that just before x-
mas... like the jerk who took the presents from outside my
mailbox last winter. it's hard to believe that there are such
jerks in this world.
otoh, we were wondering if we had enough cash to get us
through the next couple of weeks and opened a holiday card
from joe's coworker and $50 was in it. somehow, it seems to
work out.

I don't see why you couldn't switch to Nardil. For that matter,
Marplan is also an option. I know of one person who found that Parnate
and Nardil didn't work well for him, but Marplan did. Although all
three are non-selective MAO inhibitors, they don't have identical
effects on a particular person. Especially since you have responded to
Parnate, one of the other two seems like a likely candidate to me.
Another MAOI option is selegiline, which is rather different from the
above three. If you haven't tried it, it's worth considering.
Good luck with TMS. It would be great if that worked for you.
I can't remember...have you tried ECT?

From my limited experience, the different SSRIs had
wildly different effects. Nom's advice sounds good.

ect helped so long as i was on 9-10 day maintenance, but did
terrible things to my short- and long-term memory, and i'm
still getting my cognitive skills back, several years later.
my husband estimates i had 80-100 treatments over the years i
was having ect. hopefully, i'll never have ect again.
it's because of the positive response of my depression to ect
(along with meds) that my pdoc thinks i'd be a good candidate
for tms.
i mentioned selegiline to my pdoc, who said that, based on my
response to other meds, it was unlikely to be helpful.
i hadn't looked into marplan at all. i'll do so tonight.
thanks nom!
