I do believe that... this is one of the sweetest pieces of music ever
made, I mean, really, *sweet*, like the second movement of Bach's
concerto for two violins is *sweet*, if you know that one. I love it
with all my heart every single time I hear it, like in the drugstore
just now, standing at the counter while they scrounged around looking
for an emergency stash of klonny because they're out 'til tomorrow but
didn't bother to call me to tell me that after I dropped off my
prescription this morning.
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. 40 years in October. Wow. I'd really
like to find the exact release date, or even better the *recording*
date, but just turning up the month was quite a chore.
Maybe you think that love will make us fools
And so it makes you wise to break the rules
Oh little girl

i wonder if that was one of his late works. i will have to download that.
parts of the 9th are very good. i like that scene (in the Richard Gere
movie) where he is manic and tries conducting.
most of the "classical" i listen to is postmodern minimalism. some Reich
and Glass works are quite moving.

Oh, which reminds me... that news story about Bush supposedly
"conducting" an orchestra a week or two ago made me want to puke.

It was a perfect metaphor for his presidency, though.

Not sure who you have in mind, Tara, but Bush is very much in charge,
more so than any other president in recent memory. It would be great if
he were just some blustering fool making lots of symbolic gestures and
there were some knowledgeable wizard behind the scenes who actually
knows what they're doing, but unfortunately everything I've read tells
me that's not the case. Reagan might have been something like what you
describe, but Bush and his personally appointed gang of thugs ARE in
charge and running the country, up to and often beyond the limits of
what is constitutionally permissible.

Really? My take on it is, Cheney's the puppetmaster and Bush is the puppet. Of
course I'm quite prepared to be proven wrong.
The only thing I can say, either way, is, thank God my mom's father moved to

rather doubt he'd come out on top of any disagreement between the two.
Bush picks the people he likes and who pledge loyalty to him, then

could still listen to "Einstein on the Beach" in one sitting. I actually
gave a party once and made a whole bunch of people do just that. Drugs

incarnation. I did see Robert Wilson's "The Civil Wars", though. David
Byrne wrote some of the music for that.
I always liked Ligeti, ever since I heard his stuff in 2001. I just got
*his* violin concerto and man, it is a little different from Johann's.
