decisions can affect billions and billions of dollars in cash flows,
people have a strong desire to influence that outcome. e.g. To open up

It means that everything, including things that seem free, incur a
price of some kind, somewhere.
IIRC, I think the TA used that in my intro micro class to summarize the
concept of opportunity costs.

We won't necessarily do nothing. We just shouldn't do anything until we are
faced with an actual threat. Pakistan is not our nation to govern. We
certainly wouldn't care for big-monied Arab interests trying to interfere
in our political system.
But it's a moot point. In the case of nukes there is no question who will
win that pissing contest. Blind Muslims will be able to use a geiger
counter to figure out which way to face when they pray long before much
damage is done to the U.S. by Arabs wielding nukes.
Of course I do have contradictory feelings about this. The fact that Bhutto
was such a babe makes me want to go postal on somebody.

That includes the things you steal from your neighbors via the ballot box.
