Nah. Some newsreader software will stop you, but I once started a thread
called "Thread of Silence" with absolutely nothing. People joined right
in, but the problem was, their newsreaders quoted the nothing and stuck
sigs on it, then other people's newsreaders quoted the quoted, sigged
nothing and sigged that, and before you knew it, the Thread of Silence
was pretty noisy, with all the trappings of a discussion and absolutely
nothing at the bottom of it all. Which was actually kind of cool, even
though that wasn't my original idea. Not quite as good as the Virtual
Cow thread, but still pretty cool.
Now I'm remembering John Cage's book, "Silence", and the things he had
to say about silence, and why it wasn't silly at all to compose 4'33". I
performed that piece once in my room in the middle of the night, all
three movements, on a plastic alto recorder, and it was amazing the
things I heard in between the beginning and the end. I still remember
the sound of a distant ambulance siren, miles away, decades later, and
it wouldn't have even registered otherwise.
Hmm. It would be interesting to have an orchestral performance of 4'33'
here on ASD, everyone playing their parts on their instruments of choice
wherever they are at exactly the same time, and everyone afterwards
sharing what they heard.

Wasn't there a court action when someone else wrote a piece with
silence in it ?
Wasn't the defence that their silence would be totally different
because in a different hall with diff acoustics?

In other news...
A band called "Type O Negative" has a track called "The
Misinterpretation of Silence and Its Disastrous Consequences"
consisting of 67 seconds of silence.
You can buy it from the iTunes Music Store for 99 cents:

There's also a slightly shorter "Explicit" mix available:

Wikipedia:
In July 2002 composer Mike Batt (best known for being behind the 1970s
novelty/children's act "The Wombles") had charges of plagiarism filed
against him by the estate of John Cage after crediting his track "A
Minute's Silence" as being written by "Batt/Cage". Batt initially vowed
to fight the suit, even going so far as to claim that his piece is "a
much better silent piece. I have been able to say in one minute what
Cage could only say in four minutes and 33 seconds." Batt eventually
settled out of court for an undisclosed six figure sum in September 2002.

I like some John Cage, some I dont get and, some I think is just a
gimmeck for gimmecks sake.
I think he borders on musical fraud and a somewhat talented composer,,
Thats my POV though,,

I've never heard any actual music by him, except for weird stuff like
the silence piece and something else I once saw performed, I think it
was 10 radios onstage with the performers randomly twirling their
knobs. Did he write more, uh, "normal" stuff?
Anyway, I have his book "Silence" and I did enjoy reading it. I suspect
a lot of his music is more rewarding to read about than to actually
listen to, which I think is fine; part of what music is about is what
it makes you think about, and music that works best by reading read
about just works in a different way than most.
I've recorded a piece of my own, a reading of a poem from "Silence" with
electronic instrumentation and bird sounds:

You could write a negative post,,, like negative 7 is 7.7 less than
positive 7.,,,
WHAT?????
that would be shorter than a positive post!
Huh???
Make it negative.
