Object: Is weird good?
I was weird in school: I always wore sweat pants. Never wore jeans. I
remember being in kindergarten and wearing jeans, and having this itch on
my leg that I simply couldn't scratch because the denim was just too damn
thick.
Anyway, holy *****, did I catch a LOT of heat (that is to say,
ostracization--is that a word?, insults, etc.) for always wearing
sweatpants. It was different. It was weird. So to people, it was wrong.
More recently, at work during tax season last year, I would drink a can
of soda each day, but rather than put the empty cans in a recycling bin,
I built them into a large pyramid in the corner of my cubicle.
I ended up being called into an early evaluation by my bosses, who were
distressed by my abnormal behavior.
We just had a big storm in the area. I was talking to a friend of mine
(who works nearby) and she was telling me about one of her coworkers and
how, during the storm, a new employee at her firm went out in the driving
rain and did some kind of performance (pantomime) while getting drenched.
She said "oh, he's so funny! Everybody in the firm loves him."
Frankly, what he did sounds idiotic to me. Kind of the obvious class
clown behavior one expects to see exhibited by grade-schoolers than
professionals.
So I was wondering: is being weird a good thing or a bad thing? Is it
supposed to get one branded a freak or will it endear people? While
weird, is my problem that I was always subtly, naturally weird and not
overtly, attention-seekingly weird?
Should I start going to work with a lampshade on my head?

It is a very good thing, I mean, who wants to be normal? Weird people are
endearing.

Should I start going to work with a lampshade on my head?

Absolutely.

You have a nice sense of humour. People like you who grew up labeled weird end
up being the Mavericks. The originals. It's all good. You sound good.

Douglas Coupland in his book Microserfs speculated that pyramids are a geek

I like weird. In fact, I'm weird, and I don't give a ***** if others think
it's a bad thing. I guess it's all in how you look at it. Either it matters
to you, or it doesn't.
Do what you want, be who you want to be, just as long as you don't hurt

Well,I certainly like weirdness many times and think it's
good...I've certainly been considered "weird" by many people...but
when you think about it:What exactly *is* weird?,and what exactly is
"normal"?

I agree with the other poster who said it sounds like you have a good
sense of humor. I like that about you.
Personally, I think what's important is how you feel, not what other
people think about you. It sounds to me like you felt weird. It
sounds to me like the guy dancing in the rain felt "not weird".
I think how you feel about yourself affects how other people treat
you, and how other people treat you affects how you feel about
yourself. But I think if you focus on how you feel about yourself,
not on how other people treat you, then you'll likely feel better in
the end - irrespective of how other people treat you.
Man, I miss thinking about things in this way. It seemed so important
to sort that kind of thing out before. I like thinking about that
sort of thing. I miss it.
Sincerely
Stewart

Originality sometimes gets branded as weird. Particularly in
highschool. Of course there are those in highschool who seek out
"weird" and end up looking like all those other "weirdos" -- so they
aren't really weird, as they fit in with a group of kids who seek not
to fit in.
I work with a lady who's been branded as "off", "weird", "a little
different". Why? Because she insists on wearing "chucks" with her
dresses (and everything else) and she doesn't shave her legs. I
personally admire her faith in herself to be what she is without
apology. She dresses for economy and comfort. Fortunately we work in
an environment in which formality is ... well... formality. I can't
wait for the company holiday party. I gotta see this lady in Formal
Wear. Do they make rhinestone studded chucks?
I think wierd is a matter of attitude. If you are genuine, you
probably get branded as wierd. I'd rather spend an evening with
someone who knows who they are and isn't ashamed of it, than someone
who fits all the norms, but is uncomfortable in thier skin. I really
can't deal with phonies. Be who you are - but like who you are. If
you don't like who you are, it won't matter how "normal" you behave.

Oh, should be very easy unless it's a kooky color. But, even then, you'd still
find a neutral-colored bag easily, I'll bet. Mine are silver and white with
white chiffony-ish shoelaces. I bought them over 15 years ago (marked down to
$8!) and have worn them to more than a few formal events. That the sequins
haven't tarnished amazes me every time I pull them out. Sigh. I love my shoes

there are some people who are just natural comedians, and can get away

So I was wondering: is being weird a good thing or a bad thing? Is it

it depends on the environment. Tax environment? weirdness probably
not allowed. Art department? weirdness probably encouraged.
Me, I'm weird, but I can sort of conform. By being unobtrusive.
I stopped wearing dresses, but instead wore dress slacks and
silky-type blouses. Stopped wearing high heels, chose low-heel pumps
instead. Stopped wearing make-up but got fashionable easy-care
haircuts Nothing that made me stand-out, but still didn't completely
conform. I've always envied guys in office environments. They can
buy just a few suits and then rotate their shirts and ties. Women
aren't supposed to wear the same article of clothing in the same week,
and we're supposed to continually add new items and change with the
seasons. bleh.

It depends on the shade.
I am very mad at my work but it is expected of video editors, we're
all pretty loopy. It seems there has to be some inclusion in your
madness, maybe your cans were simply too exclusive?
So if you wear a lampshade, make sure you put in a dangling chain

Depends on your definition of weird doesnt it. Always wearing sweat pants
does not strike me as weird. Pretty bloody normal in fact. Here in my
country some of our kid's winter school uniforms are combination track pants
and sweat shirts. No problem there, I dont find your stacking up your drink
cans as weird either, shows a certain laziness and definately unsanitary
but not weird., after all the dregs in your cans could attract ants, flies
and other nasty crawling insects. I am surprised your cleaning staff did not
dispose of them. As far as dancing in the rain, not weird, I know lots of
people who do it, myself included. Although I have to admit I dont so much
dance in the rain, but stand in it and lift my face to the sky so I can feel
the rain falling on my face.
Now what is weird to me, is problably more bizarre to anyone else. Forcing
an oral thermometer down the eye of your penis into your uretha and then
snapping it in half is weird. Growing your hair so long that it covers your
face and looking like Cousin Itt from the Adamms family, is weird. Injecting
yourself with scotch is pretty weird (IV injection) I have known people who
have done these kinds of things, so no I dont consider you weird in the
slightest.

most are under orders not to throw out anything that isn't labelled
trash or inside a trash can. Otherwise, they'll end up having to go
dumpster-diving. I had to do that once on behalf of a janitor--he'd
thrown out a stack of marketing materials that were on TOP of a trash
can, rather than INSIDE the can. We had to remind the customer not to
give those kinds of mixed messages.
Then, at the last place I worked, our youngest staff member (19)
stacked up his cans in nice pyramids. The janitor wasn't part of a
large company, he was just on his own. He kept throwing them out.
Eventually he was fired.

dance in the rain, but stand in it and lift my face to the sky so I can feel
the rain falling on my face.

Now what is weird to me, is problably more bizarre to anyone else. Forcing
an oral thermometer down the eye of your penis into your uretha and then
snapping it in half is weird.

AARRRHKKKKKGGGGHHH.

Growing your hair so long that it covers your
face and looking like Cousin Itt from the Adamms family, is weird.

hey!!!!! I resemble that remark.
My hair is 28" long at the moment. Though I am planning on cutting
off about 2" in the near future--split ends and all, ya know.
<pout>

Injecting
yourself with scotch is pretty weird (IV injection)

weeeeeeeeeeeekkkkgggggggg.

I have known people who
have done these kinds of things, so no I dont consider you weird in the
slightest.

Then again, you've been exposed to a different variety of people than
I have....

Depends on your definition of weird doesnt it. Always wearing sweat
pants does not strike me as weird. Pretty bloody normal in fact.
Here in my country some of our kid's winter school uniforms are
combination track pants and sweat shirts. No problem there, I dont
find your stacking up your drink cans as weird either, shows a
certain laziness and definately unsanitary but not weird., after all
the dregs in your cans could attract ants, flies and other nasty
crawling insects. I am surprised your cleaning staff did not dispose
of them.

most are under orders not to throw out anything that isn't labelled
trash or inside a trash can.

Under our Occupational Health and Safety laws, anything that constitutes a
health risk to employees is rubbish, no matter where it is. If its a stack
of empty drink can that has to potential to attract flies, ants or wasps.
Out it goes. Otherwise our cleaning staff would face the sack for not doing
thier job.

Ahh but do you wear it over your face so that only your nose is showing?

True, as I said what I consider weird is pretty out there bizarre, because
everyday weird is pretty well normal around me.

Me too, but each to their own weird. Or wyrd if you prefer.

when I was in 4th grade, I did. And hence earned a nickname that I
was glad to leave behind... "hairy". Especially because it was so
prophetic.

So I was wondering: is being weird a good thing or a bad thing? Is it
supposed to get one branded a freak or will it endear people? While
weird, is my problem that I was always subtly, naturally weird and not
overtly, attention-seekingly weird?

It's a good thing if you're open-minded, because the weirder you are,
the more open-minded people will have to be to want to hang around you.
And that value tends to bring along a dozen other good ones.
The attention-getting weird people will end up being ignored, or will
become tiresome in the end. If you keep it subtle I don't see why people
wouldn't get used to it, or *grow* to like it instead of being hit by it
full-force and have the effect recede!

I was lucky to go to the High school I went to...There were a lot
of people there who would probably be considered very weird at a
public school, yet at the school I went to,they seemed to fit in
well...One guy I knew would wear women's clothes a lot,or no clothes
at all,and he was a very popular guy...
