Object: It Seems Someday I'd Learn
I noticed a couple weeks ago that I was "relaxing" back into
depression. It was just too hard to keep trying to pretend I felt
good.
I got to the point where getting a shot for depression sounded like it
might be a good idea. I wasn't quite there yet, but I could see
"there" from where I was. So, back on the vitamin f (gP) again.
while reading Peter Kramer's recent book, "Against Depression," I
wonder why I would ever want to go off the ADs. All the physical
damage that comes along with the depression, if that can be held off
it seems worth the trouble of eating a few pills.

What I recommend is, "Do what works." If cognitive or other therapy
cures your blues, go for it. If you need medication, go for that. What
matters is fixing the problem, far more than the route by which you
fix it.

as long as the meds help more than they hurt and you can afford them, I say
why not? otoh, meds mess with me physically too much so it's not worth it
for me.
Hope the meds kick in soon for you and you're back to feeling less
depressed.

What alternatives are there for depression other than meds? I have
terrible side effects as well - but without the meds I make Edgar Allen
Poe look The Osmonds. I wish I could find something that would elevate
my mood but without the physical side effects.

Valerie -- Is it possible that you could move to a medication that
works and has less in the way of side effects?

Psychotherapies (ones specific for depression), exercise, relaxation &
meditation. Psychotherapies include cognitive behavioural (rational
emotive), interpersonal, behavioural, and psychodynamic. There are also
electroconvulsive therapy and cingulotomy and soon there may be vagus
nerve and transcranial magnetic stimulation. There is phototherapy, bright
light, that works for some. There is some evidence that acupuncture may
actually work for depression and also some that very careful sleep
deprivation can, too.

There are so many antidepressants available, and some have more side affects
than others. I'd get your doctor to try out several to find what works best
for you. I'm on Wellbutrin and I don't have any really bothersome side
affects.
