well timing plays a part too ,
if i'm tired enough ,
to go to bed after one its ok ,
but that seldom happens ,

What you said kind of reminds me of the
Buddhist principle of desire being the
cause of suffering. And that human
nature is wired for desire. No amount of
anything is ever enough to satisfy the
desire for it.

That's why I detest movies where the main character makes a simple
change like moving to the old family homestead and now his life is all
happy and no longer just a materialistic void.
I just saw "A Good Year" and hated it. Super rich banker moves back to
uncle's vineyard in Provence and now life's wonderful and fulfilling.

I hate those kinda stories, too. At the
end, I'm always thinkin': yeah, show me
a scene from next week when the weather
sucks or the transmission blows or his
uncle bugs him or he stubs his toe or
something.
"Pursue yer bliss" can be translated as
always caught up in the hunt for the
next shiny dream of happily ever after.
Bollocks, I say, bollocks. I do pursue
my bliss, though, even though it's an
illusion. Hey, it passes the time. Even
though time is an illusion, too, at
least according to Buddhism.

They just setup a wireless network service in the town nearby, so with
my frequent ISP outages I'm considering putting an antenna up on the

I'm sort of concerned about some of the implications of it however. For
instance the police will be able to install "webcams" anywhere in the city.

They might have regular cams, but it would be conventional wired. It's

The debate about surveillance in public
spaces has been raging in Boston for
decades, literally. Before webcams, the
town I live in was using cameras to
issue "failure to come to a complete
stop" tickets at 3 a.m. They'd just send
the car owner the ticket and the photo.
But those got contested successfully --
because it's not the car, it's the
person, that gets ticketed. And the
photo didn't prove who was driving.
In terms of civil liberties, the horse
is outta the barn, imo, and I just
assume webcam surveillance is ubiquitous
when I'm out and about. Hello Big Brother.

Hello Big Brother.
Gayle
I fought one ticket from an automated speeding van because when you were
coming into the area there was a tree covering the speed limit sign.
Those things really bother me - but they do have to get a clear image of
the driver so operation at night without a wicked powerful (and
dangerously blinding flash) would make it impossible.
Intersection lights are increasing, but I think catching drivers running
a red is OK.
I think one of the things they aim to target first is graffiti as it has
been on the rise. But even then the suspect just has to wear a hoodie
and they're already out at night. So it would take active monitoring and
quick dispatch.
I just don't kin to the idea of an instantly installable camera.
Although the Brits seem to love the idea.

If increasing the ability to catch a
red-running driver is ok, is there a
line you would draw for law enforcement?
And why does instant installation bother
you? Most folks don't know where they
are installed anyway.

They sure do seem to. I found a webcam
in an English pub on St. Patrick's day
-- to see if there was any green beer
drinkin' goin' on. Which there was, and
plenty of it, which I didn't understand
-- but anyways. Their webcam had a
feature where a viewer could type in a
text message that appeared on a monitor
over the bar.
Purple Veggie might consider putting one

It's not the instant installation it's the infrastructure that now
exists, combined with the incredibly low entry entry price that now
exists. It costs a small fortune to install a monitor at an intersection
- there's always a debate about the cost when they want a new one. Now
it's just a $200 camera and a bit of computer configuration. They could
pick up enough kit to monitor a huge part of town for what it costs to
setup a red light cam.
It's the idea of the invasive potential that bothers me. If I had a
government which I felt confident in then I wouldn't feel creepy crawly
about it.
Although the Brits seem to love the idea.

Those are all over, but they're setup by individuals and not govt.
agencies. They're for entertainment and not surveillance.
